LITEON INTRODUCES NEW BLU-RAY DISC (BD) TRIPLE WRITER

--Up to 50GB* Capacity Ideal for Archival Storage and New HD Movie Format--

Fremont, CA. – August 17, 2006 – LiteOn IT, the world’s leader in optical storage solution proudly announces the LH-2B1S, the company’s first Blu-ray Disc (BD) triple writer. The LH-2B1S uses the revolutionary blue laser technology instead of red laser existing in today’s optical drives. The new technology provides an extremely precise laser focus and greatly increases storage capacity. LH-2B1S can store up to 50GB of data on a double-layer BD disc, equivalent to 9 hours High-Definition (HD) video or 23 hours of standard definition content or 72 CDs on a single disc. The new LH-2B1S triple writer will be available in September 2006.

The new LH-2B1S is ideal for professionals who have a growing need of archiving large files and content on a single disc. Commercial advertising, studio and catalog photographers, movie makers, and IT managers will greatly benefit from this technology as it plays back High-Definition (HD) content and archive massive data to reduce physical storage space.

“As the need and demand for larger storage capabilities among businesses and consumers continue to increase, manufacturers will continue to provide new solutions to these growing needs,” said Christine Hsing, Marketing Manager at LiteOn. “As the leader in optical storage drives, LiteOn has a responsibility to our customers to offer new products which incorporate the latest technology that meets their changing needs.”

Blu-ray is the next generation platform for High-Definition (HD) video content playback and is supported by more than 160 world’s largest gaming manufacturers, movie studios, consumer electronics and PC manufacturers.

The LH-2B1S Blu-ray Disc triple writer is capable of recording and playing back today’s most popular media formats including Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. The drive features a 2X read and write speed on BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE media, and supports DVD±R media at 12X. LH-2B1S writes DVD±R DL (Double Layer) media at 4X, rewrite DVD+RW media at 8X, DVD-RW media at 6X, and reads DVD-ROM media at 12X.

LH-2B1S also features Lite-On patented cutting edge technologies SMART-BURN for optimizing the quality of each burn, and SMART-X for setting the optimum speed of operation, enabling users to “burn and work”, running other applications while making a BD, DVD, or CD with a minimum risk of failed burns, or creating “coasters”.

The LH-2B1S incorporates Serial ATA interface which provides higher speed and performance than previously possible with the Parallel ATA Interface. Serial ATA connection eliminates potential information and performance “bottlenecking” by currently offering a 150 MB/s information transfer rate and will provide significant headroom for future improvements.

*Blu-ray disks available in single layer 25GB and double layer 50GB capacities.

Yikes...didn't catch that in the review. I just skimmed it since it has zero value to me w/o 50GB disc support...

I just wish the holographic drives were going to somewhat affordable :(

I didn't see that.. then again, the Verbatim media showed up to late to make it into the review. #-o I have heard though that the drive's BD media support wasn't that great with earlier firmware versions.

Lite-On updated their website with some info on the LH-2B1S. Oddly enough, it makes no mention of dual layer BD support. In fact, it says "up to 25GB on one BD-R / BD-RE disc". Hmm...

Not sure if it's old news but I just found this pdf where Lite-On claims that:

"4X BD-R SL writing speed will be available in the future firmware upgrade"

Thanks for the heads up jsl. I hadn't heard that.

Apparently demand is quite low for LiteON's BluRay writer right now.... I'm not sure why though. Personally, I think it's the only HD content burner I want to own so far.

Price and blank media availability might have a lot to do with it. Also even if it's a Philips/BenQ design a lot of LiteOns DVD burners have been less then steller.

I think demand is low in general.. and not just with Lite-On's drives. With price tags starting at $700, Blu-ray drives aren't exactly flying off the shelves. AACP's assinine requirements aren't helping either even if people wanted to play BD movies.
