Sony announced today that its first dedicated Blu-ray Disc™ player, the BDP-S1 model, has begun shipping to major consumer electronics retailers and specialty dealers nationwide.

This next-generation device, which is capable of playing both high-definition Blu-ray Disc (BD) prerecorded titles as well as traditional DVDs, adds an exclamation point to Sony’s full HD 1080 line of products, which ranges from BRAVIA™ flat-panel LCD and Grand WEGA SXRD® rear-projection televisions to the new PlayStation® 3 game console, Blu-ray Disc enabled VAIO computers, PC drives and recordable BD media.

“I’m thrilled that it’s here just in time for the holidays,” said Randy Waynick, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Electronics’ Home Products Division. “Combining a Sony 1080p HDTV set and our new BD player with an HDMI™-enabled A/V receiver and surround sound speakers provides the epitome of the high-definition lifestyle.”

Sony’s BDP-S1 model outputs 1920 x 1080p (progressive) high-definition video. It is the highest resolution HD signal currently available through an HDMI connection. The player supports various high quality video codecs, including MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC and VC1. For those consumers who own an HDTV set without HDMI, an analog component output for 1080i (interlaced) has been included.

The model is compatible with standard DVDs with the added feature of 1080p upscaling through HDMI, giving new life and improving the picture performance of existing DVD libraries.

Unfortunately, they still want $1000 for it.

Definitely about f'ing time. It's gotta be what, a year late?

Here's an idea though... maybe Sony has been trying to conserve the critical Blu-ray components for the PS3?

Six months. In that time, you'd think the price would have gone down some.

Yeah... you'd have to be nuts to pay $1000 for a standalone instead of paying $600 for PS3.

Yeah, 6 months late, and only 3 weeks before Christmas. Can they get the units to the all of the Sony Stores in time? Or will they get just a first shipment, sell out and have to wait until January for more stock?

And you'd have to be nuts to pay $5000 for a PS3 on ebay instead of just picking up a stand alone player for $1000 :P

(sorry, couldn't help myself!)
