Blu-Ray burner choices...

Hi all!

I need a little help choosing a Blu Ray burner. It will be used for data backup mostly, with some video use.

SATA would be nice, but not a requirement.

Being able to burn 50GB discs, though, IS a requirement for me (even if they're not available yet :().

Fast would be nice, too 8)

If memory serves, LG has a 4x Blu Ray writer on the horizon? If that'll do 50GB discs, I'll wait for one of those.

How are the Philips SPD7000's? Newegg seems to have a decent price on them...amusing that it comes with a TDK blank disc instead of a Philips disc

The LG GBW-H10N can't write to 50GB discs. I don't know whey their engineers did that.

If I remember right, the SPD7000 is based on the Lite-On LH-2B1S. Lite-On still hasn't sent us one so I really can't comment. One thing that does stick out in my mind is that the drive writes to 50GB media at only 1x.

Thanks for the info!

1x to DL 50GB media does not sound appealing :(

I think your only choice is the Panasonic BluRay burner. It's a good burner in terms of quality, and handles BD-R, BD-RE, BD-RDL, and I *THINK* BD-REDL all at 2x.

Ah, thanks! Now I just need to find the thing (newegg doesn't have it).

Anyone know what the Plex drive is based on?

It's based on the Panasonic. You'd have to be crazy to pay what Plextor wants for it though.

Here's the cheapest price I could find:

If you want to go with a more reputable dealer, ZZF has it for $650:

Yeah, Plex wants WAY too much for it.

I like ZZF, though...$650 isn't too bad...
