Poking around on Alienwares website (a friend is shopping for a laptop), and if you select a Blu-Ray burner in the build it shows 50GB Panasonic blank media that can be added to the order.

Anyone seen any anywhere else...

I saw a single Sony BD-R DL at a Sony Store here in Canada quite a few months ago. It was priced at $50 IIRC.

I *think* BD-R DL is readily available from Verbatim distributors, too.

Sigh...newegg has some TDK's:

Figures; see it right after I post

Verbatium is what I would want, though...I think. TDK's good, too. If the distrib's have it, hopefully it'll show in the stores soon.

I know a number of vendors offer it but I've only seen Sony 50GB discs.

I hope Sony's Blu-Ray discs are better than their DVD media...unless you get the MIJ stuff, it's pretty bad (well, compared to Verbatium media which is about all I use anymore).

I'm not sure if things have changed, but last time I checked Sony wasn't even making their 50GB discs. If I remember right, it was Matsushita (Panasonic).

I've actually been pretty happy with Sony's 16x DVD+R/-R discs. They work pretty well in most drives and you can usually find them for cheap.

That newegg price is actually pretty decent. And at this point, I wouldn't worry about the brand, it's all high quality MIJ stuff at this point (with the exception of Panasonic who has a plant in California).

Unlike [buck] I have a lot of reservations about the TDK BD-RDL media. I've heard nothing but bad things about TDK BD-Rs within the industry, especially regarding their Inkjet Printable BD-Rs, and their regular BD-RDL media. Apparently their BD-Rs were so barely within spec that when they added the inkjet printable layer it threw things off. The BD-RDL's are also nothing but trouble from what I've been told.

I have no personal experience with them yet though... but one thing we've learned from CDR and DVDR media is that a disc does not need to be 'within spec' to burn successfully. But we've also learned that a disc does not need to fail to burn, to be a bad disc.

On a side note, Verbatim's BD-RDL are not available yet... maybe in Japan, but not in North America.

Don't listen to me, guys. I'm sure Dolph has a lot more data than I do.

I have no experience with BD-R DL discs myself either, but from what I hear, they won't be coming down to a "consumer friendly" affordable price level for many years. For BD recordables, BD-R SL will reign king for a long time and I expect we'll see some significant price drops in the next couple years...
