155,000 Xbox HD DVD Drives Sold In The US

A few months ago, the HD DVD Promotion Group announced that they'd sold 100,000 HD DVD players in the US. They went out of their way to discount the PS3 as a Blu-ray player because its a console and people aren't using it to watch movies.

While this might be the case with the PS3, people appear to be using the Xbox 360 to watch movies. According to CNET, Microsoft has sold 150,000 Xbox 360 HD DVD drives in the US alone.

There were also some surprising stats given. Microsoft was reluctant to tell us how many HD DVD drives for the Xbox 360 it has sold worldwide, but it did tell us that in the US it has shifted 155,000 of them. This is apparently the biggest-selling accessory Microsoft has ever sold for the 360.

So yes, there are 50,000 more drives out there than stand alone players. Maybe the HD DVD Promotions Group should start including these numbers in their stats?

Very interesting news-bit, thanks for sharing.
And yes, the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive numbers sold is a more revealing stat than PS3 sales figures since they are designed for one purpose: to play HD DVD's.

More recently, the HD DVD group announced that there are over 150,000 standalone HD DVD players that have been sold in the US.
