Why is Blue Ray Media so EXPENSIVE !!!

I have not posted in a while, thus this may have been answered already however, here goes.

I would like to be able to simply archive some of my data , like old tv series etc. I do not want to copy blue ray movies or whatever.

Everytime I look into the price of simple blue ray discs here in Canada, I see the same thing over and over again.
Very limited availablility and very high prices for blank media. What the heck is going on ??? Discs have been available for more than
a year or two now and yet same high prices and limited availablity.

I would love to buy a blu ray writer and start using this technology, but at $12 - $20 for one blank write once 25GB disc, this will sure not be happening for me for a very long time.

Insights, conspiracy theories, comments ???? ( Ian , Dolphin, ... )

I blame the belief that TDK BD-Rs are cheaper than Verbatim (which is completely false). Also people want to make some money on Blu-Ray before the pricing falls to the point that you can only mark it up 1-2 pennies a disc (which is where DVDs are right now, no joke).

How many are you looking for? I might be able to lend you a hand ^_^

I still remember when CD-R discs were $10+ a pop.

I feel your pain too, I've only burnt one BD-R disc in my BDR-202 drive, re-written the same 2 bd-re discs probably 40 times each now

To an extent I understand your point, however, this would suggest to me that a disc should be about $2 by now and they would make a fine profit. By charging $10 - $20 for a disc that I believe when manufactured in quantity cannot cost too much more than a standard DVD-R disc ( Correct me if I am wrong here ) I cannot help but jump to the conclusion that we are getting SCREWED,

Alternately, the fear of people making copies of blue ray movies may be another reason for the prices being held ARTIFICIALLY high !

Thanks for the offer Dolphin, however I do not even have a blue ray writer yet due to this issue. Would be glad to get one if the discs were reasonable.

And that's partly why I bought a hd-dvd player first, they were stoopid cheap last year and so are the movies. I also bought a demo Panasonic BDP-10a for 160  becuase I figured the supply of new cheap movies would dry up and I'd need a BD player.
I have now had a LG combo BD/hd burner reader and I also have only used the included BD-RE disk once, the disk at least worked fine after all that time burning it. I hope the media gets cheaper soon so I can actually use it.

TDK BD-R's are cheaper as Verbatim in most of the world. ALtough the difference is in some places very small.
Then again RITEK BD-R's are even cheaper as TDK.

The thing is that the current BLU RAY Disc process is expensive technology. Of the few manufacturers the companies do want to get most of their investments back as fast as posible. Because of these investments most cheap manufacturers currently haven't put much money in it. Simply because of the market was to unclear (Lead Data), because they don't have the money (Infosmart. ). The point is in the first months only the big technology compannies were able to manufacture blu ray. Now slowly the middle league CMC,Ritek,MBIL is starting to produce and they are increasing Blu ray production with a growing market. This has caused that prices are dropping slowly over the last few months. (At least in Japan and Europe this has been seen.)
Another problem is stock. Most compannies seem to order very little stock because they think it's risky. I have seen some compannies giving quite some discounts if stores order larger bulk amounts.

They are going down in price. All new market items are expensive, because they are reaching the 'early adopters'. I remember when normal dvds were bloody expensive. As you see blu rays being advertised on tv more and more they will come down in price. I use http://www.blueraysearch.com to find the best price on blu ray dvds - handy little tool.

I wouldn't use any website that spells Blu-ray as "blue ray". [-X

Stupid spamming DJ. Don't use your real email address if you're going to spam a forum... especially when your phone number is listed online.
