Another data point.
I just completed my first "real" video DVD with the optorite. I burnt 2 copies, one prototype on a Memorex DVD+RW @ 2.4x. This burn completed fine and played correctly on my Xbox. I then created a second copy of the DVD from the same image on the DVD+R that came with the optorite. It completed without error, but it seemed that the "active" light stayed on the drive after it finished. The disk worked fine in my Xbox.

Both of these burns were done from DVD architect v 1.0 using the 2.09 firmware.

Which software do you use to record to -R media? I've never seen this problem. If you use Nero Burning Rom, and make sure you select "no multisession", it should finalize the disc automatically.

Use these steps to reproduce the problem.
1. Use DVDdecryptor to make an iso of an original dvd disc.
2. Burn the iso file to a Verbatim DVD-R.
3. Make an iso file from the Verbatim DVD-R made in step 2.

DVDdecryptor will give an error saying it cannot read the media towards the end of the disc. The disc will not play back in the Optorite drive and/or a standalone dvd player that supports DVD-R.

The above problem does not happen with DVD+R.

Has anyone managed to use HD-burn with cd-r's from CMC Magnetics?

4X FugiFilm

I finally decided to give my DVD-R FugiFilm a shot at 4X and it worked like a champ! No problem at all with Nero. I still haven't been able to HDBurn any of my Imation CD's. Still get the same error with Nero (Power Calibration Error) and then Gold5 gives me an error, but I don't even know if I am doing it right (not as easy to use as Nero).

Anyway, I really enjoyed this drive so far! Definitely worth the $160 I paid for it.

I recommend it to everyone who is looking for a DVD Burner.

I see that 50 Memorex CD-R 48X is on sale on Amazon for around $10 something. Has anyone tried to use HDBurn on Memorex or is it cheap media too?

Impressive Performance

Hi,
I have the Optorite for over a week now and so far I'm very satisfy with it. I had burned (3) DVR-R, (1) DVR+R, and several Fuji CDR using HD-burn. Everything came out perfect and no coaster. I have to say this drive is very impressive.

Multisession DVD (Data)

Since there seem to be few people who are experienced with this drive, I though I'd ask this quick question...

I wanted to use my Optorite (firmware 2.11) to backup some data, so I used Nero 6 to burn a multisession ISO DVD on to cheap "Datawrite" media. The DVD burned ok (no errors), but the problem is the Optorite won't read it at all, and so when trying to continue the disk with another session, it can't find any tracks to add to.

So I thought that basically it burned a coaster - the odd thing is, my plain old Toshiba DVD drive seems to be able to read this disk just fine.

Anybody got any ideas?

Are you running any software that will lock the drive, in particular packet writing softwares such as B's Clip? I was using B's Clip with my Optorite previously and I was unable to read my DVD-Rs written in UDF mode. Uninstalling B's Clip seems to solve the problem. I am using Nero 6 now with InCD4.

Remember to select UDF mode for your DVDs if you wish to burn files over 4GB in size. I created 2 coasters burning in iso9660 mode, as Nero did not warn me and burned "successfully", but the resulting file is only 200kb in size :(

No packet writing software installed, and total of all the files burned was less than 1GB. It would have been burned as ISO though, rather than UDF (if that makes a difference).

FMI EP40072G media at CompUSA

I finally received my OptoRite DVD burner yesterday from accupc.com.

They shipped my drive at the same day (placed an order online at approx. 2:30 p.m.) via FedEx Express Saver (FREE), and it arrived even a day earlier than was expected. Paid $159.75 with free shipping. The results of the service by Accupc.com are very impressive!

Unfortunately I do not have anything ready to burn yet, planning to capture my family videos from Sony TRV-240 camcorder, edit and output to DVD. At the same time I would like to test the drive for burning DVD-R and DVD+R disks so I can have time for returning the drive back if it is defective. What would you recommend for this burner to test its ability to successfully burn DVD disks?

There is a pack of 10 DVD-R disks on sale at CompUSA for $9.99. The brand name is (from CompUSA's website) FMI, the manufacturer's P/N is EP40072G. Has anyone tried this media on OptoRite burner? It sounds like a good price. The regular price for these DVD-R disks at CompUSA is $19.99, and today is the last day when you can get them for $9.99.

Those CompUSA are a cheap x1 (slow) DVD-R brand, it would take 60min/disc to record. I got a pack of 10 Memorex x4 DVD+R discs at CompUSA a couple weeks ago on sale for $14.39 and they work great with the Optorite and only take 15min for recording a full disc. Also the DVD+R and +RW discs have a very short lead in/lead out compared to the -R and -RW discs. I find even if I record only a small amount of video (200MB out of the 4700MB) a DVD-R or -RW needs to record about 1 GB and take 20min+ no matter what. A +R or +RW records much quicker and can take under 1min with small test data. I recommend you get a few +RW discs (x2.4 speed) for testing first and they are great for data/backup discs besides video. Look for a sale on DVD+R media, I believe Best Buy has Memorex or TDK x4 DVD+R media on sale like a pack of 25 for $35.

I have not had good results with CompUSA brand DVD+RW.. So am staying away.

My Imation 2.4 x + R on sale from Office Depot and TDK 4X +R work great. I have seen some decent prices for TDK media both with DVD style cases and spindles at Target.

The HD Burn feature works perfectly with the Fuji 48x CDR, I saw those at Radio Shack and CompUSA.

Phillips and Sony DVD+RW have worked great for me so far.

The CompUSA brand 10-pack DVD-R discs are made by either Princo, LeadData or Optodisc, Although they are rated at 1X, The Optorite DD0203 is able to burn them at 2X, at least for the discs made by Optodisc, without any problem, but it may be tricky to identify the discs made by Optodisc.

CompUSA also has 5-pack 2.4X DVD+RW on sale at $11.99 before tax, which should be ideal for test burns for beginners. They are also made by Optodisc with decent quality.

Is it just me, or do they only put crap media in sampler packs, thus the cheap price.

I suggest you get FujiFilm 2.4x DVD+R 50/pack or TDK 4x DVD+R 100/pack from Best Buy when they're on sale, which comes out to $1.30/disc. These blanks are made by Ricoh. I've been using them for the past 3 months, and haven't produced a coaster yet. The 2.4x takes 22-23 min, while the 4x takes 15-16 min.

New firmware 215 on firmware-flash

I saw a new firmware for the Optorite on the firmware-flash website, but it seems like the firmware on the Optorite website is still version 211.

Anyway, I have flashed my drive with it, but I don't know what changes are in the new firmware. Anyone has tried it and knows what the new firmware does, like support for more media?

I finally found some Maxell's that appeared to work with hd burn in Nero 6; went without a hitch, but the optorite now says the disc is empty; so does my other burner. looks like I have a bad one; seems to work ok with dvd discs though.

I found really cheap media at CompUSA - $9.99 for 10 DVD-R 1x disks and decided to try to burn on my OptoRite drive. I was surprised when the OptoRite burned couple of these disks with no problems or errors at 2x speed. However, the burned disks were not recognizable by WinDVD 4 using the same OptoRite drive, or DVD-ROM drives on my two other computers, but were recognized by xBox and my Samsung 5-disk DVD changer. The movies that I burned on these disks played well on Samsung and xBox. There is a pack of two for $1.99 of the same disks at CompUSA. I also tried CompUSA 2.4x DVD+RW disks on OptoRite (pack of 5 for $11.99) and burned them with no problem as well. The DVD+RW movie played on xBox, Samsung recognized it, but played with a lot of mosaic garbage, and WinDVD 4 did not recognize the movie at all.

So far I haven't tried any decent brand expensive media with my new OptoRite drive, but am impressed with the ability of the drive to burn cheap media. I am concerned about the fact that the burned movie disks could not be played by either OptoRite drive or WinDVD 4 software, although I was able to see the contents of the disks in Windows Explorer using OptoRite, which gives me an idea that the problem is WinDVD 4, and not OptoRite, and, again, I was able to play the movies on xBox and Samsung DVD player, but not on DVD-ROM drives of other computers (also using WinDVD).

What is the best format (DVD-R or DVD+R) for using on other computers with regular DVD-ROM drive? And, in my case, what is the problem: media type (DVD-R), brand (CompUSA) or WinDVD?

Also I would like to ask if anybody knows if it is possible to convert an internal IDE DVD burner (OptoRite in my case) to external USB-2 or Firewire (preferred) drive. Are there any enclosure boxes on the market that would convert internal IDE burner to external USB-2 or Firewire, and what is the best place to buy them?

Thanks

Yes, it is possible. Here is some information about various combo enclosures (both USB 2.0 and Firewire):

http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=12097

Most of the listed manufacturers/retailers also sell USB only and Firewire only enclosures for a little less money.

I just received Matrix brand DVD-R 1-4x from shop4tech.com for $0.99 a piece. I get a power calibration error when only at 1x happens during write even though the simulation goes through fine.
So my question, do I take the hit and pay the shipping back (RMA) for the 50 DVD-R's or hope that with the updated OPTORITE firmware these DVD-R's will someday burn? I do have the latest firmware already 2.17, and the reviews on these DVD-R's are good from customers. Thanks.

2.17??

I just went to Optorite's firmware page today and 2.16 is the latest bios! where do you find 2.17???

I knew that was going to come back and bite me. I was vaguely remebering without having to go back and check. It's actually 2.15, I guess it was my DVD-ROM drive I flashed to 2.17 or X.17 the other day.
Still doesn't help my question though
