CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 2004--Verbatim(R)
Corporation announced today that it is on schedule to deliver the
industry's first Double-Layer DVD+R (DVD+R DL) discs. The new 2.4x
DataLifePlus(R) media nearly doubles the storage capacity on DVD
recordable discs from 4.7GB to 8.5GB on a single side while
maintaining compatibility with existing DVD video players and DVD-ROM
drives. Verbatim's target launch date is spring 2004 to coincide with
DVD+R DL hardware introductions by DVD+RW Alliance members.

At least they haven't given a definite ship date this time. I'm sick of them saying something will ship one month and it doesn't show up in retail stores until 6 months later.

I want a drive (Plextor or NEC), and a 200 pack of the discs. NOW. Not April. NOW please! :)

And a new DVDShrink release to go with it....then I'll be happy!

And no, Recode2 does NOT count!

Besides, Recode2 won't run under WINE...

Somewhat...I'm still experminting with it. It'll start no problem, but can't open an actual DVD. I haven't tried it with just dvd files yet. Give me a few minutes and I'll try it out :)

Cool :) :P

Gotta try DVD Decrypter next!
Too bad Shrink can't rip movies directly. Ah well, there's always decss. And I think K3b can rip if you have decss...not 100% on that one, though. I do know it can rip a movie and encode it to DivX for you...

Maybe Shrink will be able to rip with the next WINE release - every version is better than the last. I've been trying for more than a year to get Forte Agent working under WINE, without success. So I switched to PAN. Just installed the latest WINE, and guess what: Agent runs perfectly. Figures...

Edit: DVD Decrypter runs but shows no devices. Apparently, it (and DVDShink) need ASPI to rip. I know how to enable ASPI under Linux, but I'm not sure how it'll affect K3b or even if it'll show up in WINE. For now, I'm not going to mess with it. Maybe tomorrow :)

You'll still need something like DVD Decrypter to decrypt the movie. Plus a nomral dual-layer DVD is still a bit bigger than DVD+R DL's, so on some movies something like DVD Shrink will still be needed. But: the quality will be almost perfect!!
