Looks like Plextor is going to be the first one out with a 12x dvd-burner unless Philips comes out with theirs first.

Oh my god, No, No, No. I just bought the damn DVR-107.

Arggh, please tell me it won't be out until June. No, No, No. I gave up on Plextor and look what happened to me!

On a side note, it looks exactly like the PX-708A.

According to that info it will be available in Japan about mid-June. And yes, there will be an SATA version:

I have been waiting for quite some time for this one to come out and was thinking about jumping ship like aviationwiz and buying the DVR107 but may now wait for this one.

I've been waiting and wondering what Plextor will release next. This will most likely be the next dvd-burner that I'll get. The current Plextor PX708a has worked great for me. I'll get the SATA version if it will work with the current motherboards that have onboard SATA controllers.

I'll get the SATA version if it will work with the current motherboards.

My motherboard doesn't have SATA so I'll just get a new motherboard at the same time.

Functionally, SATA is mere hype and marketing spin on an optical drive. It's akin to putting 150mph speed rated tires on a Vanagon, it doesn't do squat - it won't make your Vanagon go 1 mile per week faster.

Plextor will not be seeing me buy one. The 708 was the worst dvd burner I have owned yet. I'll stick to my dvr-107 at the "slow" 8X on cheap discs that actually work.When they get their dvd-r capabilities going better I might consider one but thats a big might.I'll give the 708 a good note on dvd+rs at least it did something good.

That's only half of the picture. You are clearly thinking of the transfer speeds only.

Serial ATA's point-to-point nature and no need for half-assed bus arbitration protocols (slave/master on PATA) should ensure that the compatibility problems of having two opticals on the same channel are in the past.

If you haven't run into optical ATAPI drive compatibility problems when run on the same PATA channel, be thankful. I know how painful they can be, having tried several dozens of various drives from various manufacturers sharing the same channel.

Furthermore, if NCQ from SATA II is to be implemented on ATAPI devices, we could see additional higher burst transfers, lower seek times and lower cpu utilisation figures.

As a last point, if you consider that you can PCI bus arbitrate four devices using one IRQ (one SATA controller), you are actually saving resources with SATA. The same on PATA would require 2 IRQs and even then the devices would share the ATA channel.

Putting all this together, SATA is already as it is useful for ATAPI devices and can only become more so in the future.

You suppose this is just an over-clocked 708A?
I am probably not going to chase down the speed daemon thingy.... after seeing that I have to worry so much about the 4x media that I have burnt at 8x....

i really like how it raises the bar in other things too:
48x CDR writing
16x SL/12x DL DVD read speed
8MB buffer

This drive is looking better all the time.

According to the German site heise, this drive will offer enhanced diagnostic tools as well as 12x burning. The new version of Plextools Professional includes a "Q-check" that allows measurement of PI Sum 8, PIF and POF for DVDs as well as BLER, C1 and C2 for CDs!!

And that's not all: apparently it will display Beta- and Jitter values of burned discs as well as Focus-Error and Tracking-Error for blank media.

The availability date is May, price ca. 208 Euros.

The same news item says that the 8x DVD+R media Plextor is releasing in April will be writable at 12x. Also Plextor Europe is waffling on dual layer support.

As of yet no company will be able to deliver dual-layering, q2 is possible but dont count on it I think Q3 and on you will see DVD9-support.
