Okay... I know it's taboo, but I think everyone really would like to see these:

And let me be the first to say: "Damn! They beat me to it!!!"

Also... "holy cow, that sucks!"

it doesn't say there what drive was used to BURN those DVDs.
do you know?

I'd also like to know what drive they burned it with...

don't know off hand, also the site appears to be down now?

I'll try to find out later. Since I'm at work now, I can't e-mail anyone about it, or access MSN messenger

My guess would be a LiteON 832s, since it's the closest dual layer drive to being ready for sale.

Those results are appalling.

Clearly much more work is required.

I wasn't going to post this since I haven't had a lot of time to test this drive (or enough DL media), but here goes:

Wow! Not bad at all. Ian's results are good, but the reuslts over at CDRInfo suck.

did you burn *AND* scan that media in the Sony DRU-700a? Is it a LiteON OEM?

Curiouser and curiouser...

Not exactly speedy...

Ian, do your discs work on most DVD players you've tried?

The consensus I'm getting is that they don't, on a good 50-60% of players, particularly older units.

Yeah, well who knows what drive burned those discs. I haven't had time to go and scan the discs with an 811S or 812S (the 401S I normally use for KProbe wouldn't recognize it at all). I'll post results with those drives later.

The DRU-700A seems to be based on the 832S. Unforunately, like the 530A, it can't write to 4x media at 8x.

If that Sony/Lite-On is cheap enough, and the media is cheap enough, I'd take the plunge as a secondary DVD burner to the PX-712SA, put it in a different computer of course, don't want to ruin the all SATA goodness.

Ian, those PO levels are far in excess of the specs, is that disc functional?

Like I said before, I haven't had a chance to do a lot of tests with this media and/or the drive yet. I was hoping to get more info before posting junk in the forum.

Well let us know when you have tried playing it in a player.

I'm expecting some DVD+R9s in a couple weeks too.

Mitsubishi is *NOT* the only manufacturer right now

Yeah, but they'd like you to think that.

Here's another picture for you guys:

The discs don't look much different than most single layer DVD+R media. The dye is bout the same color (more purple than in the picture) and it doesn't seem any thicker, at least to me.

Just an FYI.. these disks aren't readable in the Lite-On 401S, 811S or my Samsung 48x combo drive. Oddly enough, my old Ricoh 5125 can. Go figure...

Wierd, well, I always knew that the ol' MP5125 was a good drive
I sold it shortly after buying my PX-708A :)

To my information: Lite-On (Sony) have not got it right yet for DL writing. According to them the discs do not work in Lite-On combo drives either - along with many others.

Hmm... these don't look like great results. Do you guys think this is more likely a media problem? Drive problem? Firware problem? Will it be possible to eventually get decent quality burns with the first gen of drives (Liteon, NEC, Benq, etc..)?

Hopefully it's a firmware problem but it will be interesting to see how good/bad the compatibility will be for DVD+R DL in general and if it can be improved by bitsetting to DVD-ROM (which the Sony firmware probably won't support). Anyway I think it's a good idea to wait and see how the Lite-On/Sony compares with the BenQ/Philips DW830A/DVDRW885 and other drives when it comes to compatibility, burn quality etc.
BTW, the PI/PO graph looks really weird regarding the differences between PI sum 8 levels and PO sum 1 levels. Is it even possible in theory to have a such result?

According to the brand-new LiteOn bitsetting tool, DL drives will indeed be bitsetting DVD-9 media.
BitSetting for DVD media (include Double Layer disks)

Retested with the 812S. The KProbe scores are better, but the CD Speed graph doesn't instill a lot of confidence.
