I just got Lite-On LDW851S. When I burn on FujiFilm (TYG01) DVD-R media at 4x, I get stuttering and pixelation on my Panasonic DVD-RV32. However, the dics play fine on my PC DVD drive. To burn my test discs, I used Nero 6.3.1.6 DVD-copy function using a temporary image. People at http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ report no probelms using FujiFilm (TYG01) media with RV32 players. What is my problem? Media? Nero? Player?

LiteOn burners really prefer +R media over -R media. What firmware version are you using?

The latest one - GH0S. Also, the discs play fine on my DVD drive. So how can it be the burner? Unfotunately, my RV32 player doesn't play DVD+R, so I am stuck with DVD-R. Any recoomedations on the best DVD-R media for LDW-851S?

Burners can read better because they have better error correction than most other devices. Something reading on our burner doesn't mean it'll always read elsewhere.

If you booktype your +R discs, that will make your +R burns more compatible.

But TY -R *should* work. And if it's causing problems, then... well, I guess GS0H isn't the best firmware around... you may try other firmwares like GS0A.

How do you set the book type in Nero? When I burn my DVD-R discs in Nero, Nero doesn't show the book type in DISC INFO at all - just says that the disc is DVD Video. I got a DVD+R from a friend, and Nero shows DVD+R as book type for it. What does it mean when there is no book type? Does it mean it's DVD Video? Is it important to set book type?

booktype is for DVD+R/W only, not DVD-R.

Anyways, that's not the problem here. If the drive *can* read -R, then it's a media/burn quality issue. As the discs are TY, we can rule out media.

The LiteOn is notorious for poor quality QA and calibration on DVDR drives -- some are great, some are awful. I always recommend the Japanese brands currently for DVDR because most of the Taiwanese brands are the same. +R only works better on the LiteOn because it is easier to write a +R disc with a crappy drive calibration and get away with it.

The RV32 is a Panasonic isn't it? In my experience Toshiba and Panasonic drives spit +R media regardless of booktype -- my Tosh RDXS30 certainly does, as does my Panasonic portable.

You could try a couple of different types of -R media, but personally I'd say you need to get it RMAd if it doesn't work well with TY.

I'd also concur that it's the drive.

If you have the latest firmware and are burning at 2x (not any faster) using TY DVD-R or Ritek (R02)/ Verbatim (MCC002) DVD+R, then I think it's just as good as it's gonna get.

Personally I wouldn't buy any of the LiteOn dvd drives for dvd burning, but hey, that's just me :)

Burning at any speed that doesn't work in the end, is bad idea.

Unfortunately, as both manufacturers of dvd burners and dvd discs are lying out of their butts about dvd burn speed compatibility, there are no hard rules.

Just burn on media and at the speed that still works for you.

Based on what I've read, the aforementioned media should be safe bets for LWD-851s.

Try using DVDShrink instead of Nero6 and see if that works. I backed up a copy of The Matrix and it played fine on my computer and Toshiba SD-4800 DVD player. I know Toshiba players only play DVD-Rs, but I'm not sure about Panasonic.
