Apparently not compatible with the two most popular drives out there, NEC and Pioneer, either. Seeing as they have the same controller, is there some sort of issue with their setup that prevents them from being compatible?

Programs like KProbe, CDSpeed, and DIP really don't do very much. The firmware/chipset is what reads the disc, gathers the errors, and reports them back. All that these programs do is act as the messenger and draws pretty graphs of the data being sent to them. In other words, if the firmware/chipset of the drive doesn't support reporting back such data, then there's nothing that KP, CDS, or DIP can do.

I know that Erik is trying to get more companies to cooperate with him. Hopefully he can get Plextor and Pioneer to see the light as well.

Will adding jitter supply a more meaningful quality test?

Plextor is VERY unlikely! They seem rather set on only having their own software do the testing.

Still it remains to be seen which drives will be any good at reading disc quality with any accuracy.

I've been watching for this news! The tool gets better all the time. Two observations:

• it allows restricted reading speed (e.g. 4x CAV or 6x CAV) with my LiteOn LTD-163 DVD drive (which KProbe2 does not)
• a quality check on an audio CD in my LTR 48246S didn't work. The error counters climbed astronomically while the progress count remained at 0%. This is shown in the screen shot:

MediumRare: I noticed the issue with a lot of LiteOn CD Burners, that they could no longer scan media... Erik is aware of the issue, and will hopefully fix it in future renditions.

But it can't actually restrict the speed for these drives so there's no point, right?

I found it interesting that there is no mention of Liteon combo drive support, and that he lists the old Sony DDU1611 (OEM LTD-122) as supported while the LTD-122 is not listed. Maybe he meant the DDU1612 which is a LTD-166S.

I'm curious about how in the hell he pulled off "Support for external drives on systems without ASPI"

Well with the 2 scans I tried (4x, and 6x) the speed shown actually started at 2x and 3x. I didn't time how long it took to scan- will do that tomorrow- but the curve shown on the quality scan was significantly lower than at max speed and the PI count was also significantly lower. So my impression is that it actually does restrict the speed, albeit at CAV, not CLV.

The speed control for DVD-ROMs is very real: This scan is at 1x:

One funny thing is that the drive revs up to full speed after completing the test and stays there until the disc is ejected.

I have some problems with totals and averages, though. For example, look at these PIF values:

The averages are about the same, but the totals differ by more than 4x ! Other ratios aren't constant either. I'd also like to know what the units are for these rates (counts per MB or second or ECC sector or sample).

You may have to activate an option under "File / Options / Disc Quality". In my case, it just popped up after the first scan I did last night- something like this (only 600 MiB on this one):



The corresponding check box ("Show statistics") is always cleared in my case, but they show up anyway.

I added the start and end speeds manually for the CAV cases.

Incidentally, the screen shots for the other scanning speeds are available too- I didn't want to clutter the post. They're all on my data dump at 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x and max.

Have a BenQ DW822A (B3BC) installed in an External USB 2.0 Case (InSystems ChipSet). I can't run V3 for the quality test. I receive the following message after spin-up "ERROR INITIALIZING TEST".

Anyone have an IDEA what that problem is ???

There's a new version 3.10 of CD-DVD-Speed available: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/files/NeroCDSpeed_310.zip (saw this at CDFreaks). Change log:

• Improved Disc Quality test
  - Added support for older CD recorders and Combo drives (C1/C2 test)
  - Added C2 error test for drives who can't report C1 errors
  - Graph options are available by right-clicking on the graphs
• Small improvements and bug fixes

This fixes the problems with LiteOn CD-RW drives reported earlier (the first scan I tried showed the old problem, but after aborting it, things were fine). I really appreciate that it's now possible to fix or adjust the scaling after a scan.
