Here's the first two paragraphs translated by babelfish from the original link:

Ricoh Corp. will sell the DVD-R media from June 29th as strengthening the stock of the record type DVD media. To line up the product of 4 types, as for price all open prices. At 4 product total, a monthly sale figure of 500 thousand is planned.

The same company sold drive and the media as a DVD+R/RW camp until now, but concerning the entry to the latest DVD-R media, "utilizing the present result, in the country by the fact that DVD-R which presently is the active postscript type DVD media with many environment is added to line-up, you aim toward more leap as a record type DVD manufacturer", that it has explained.

Since Ricoh has no retail presence in North America, this news probably won't affect most people here. But that 20-pack cakebox does look like a Ritek OEM package, and I wonder if Ricoh uses ite own or Ritek's MID?[/quote]

Perhaps Ricoh will license the Ricoh MIDs for DVD-R to Ritek, and a lot of Ritek in future will be Ricoh like the DVD+R? I can only see this as being a good thing.

I think all this cross-pollenation of manufacturers and formats only goes to show that the industry has acknowledged that each format has found its niche and both are here to stay. Again, this has to be positive.

If that is the case, Ritek must have improved their quality control all across their product lines.

I prefer Ritek DVD+R and Ritek DVD+RW to most other DVD+R and DVD+RW media partly because they usually have Ricoh media IDs that are of great quality.

Can't be that much. Ricoh, like Pioneer, Sony, and Hitachi, doesn't run production lines for optical storage media inside Japan because Taiwanese, Chinese, and South Korean manufacturers does that much more efficiently. 50 million a month is far more than Taiyo Yuden's figure and TY has had factories in South Korea and other countries beside Japan. Annual worldwide production of DVD recordable media must be around 1 to 3 billion disks though this is only June this year yet. Either Ritek or CMC Magnectics will be No. 1. BeAll has just begun price war against Ritek, Gigastorage, Prodisc, CMC in South Korea. 4x DVD+R from BeAll for US$0.5 now from US$1 a week ago. :D

Looks like Ricoh is using the 8X Maxell made DVD-R discs (MXL RG03) for now (the last item listed under 8X DVD-R media):

According to the above link, DVD-R media with Ricoh's own MID are expected in the future.
