AOpen finally released the specs for this drive:

http://english.aopen.com.tw/products/dv ... 608ARR.htm

Writing Speeds:
DVD+R: 16x
DVD+RW: 4x
DVD+R DL: 2.4x
DVD-R: 8x
DVD-R: 4x
CD-R: 48x
CD-RW: 32x

Read Speeds:
DVD-ROM (Single): 16x Max
DVD-ROM (Dual): 8x Max
DVD±R: 8x Max
DVD±RW: 8x Max
DVD±R DL: 8x Max
CD-ROM: 48x Max

Access Times:
DVD-ROM: 140ms
CD-ROM: 120ms

Buffer Size: 2MB

I have no idea if it uses P-CAV or Z-CLV when writing at 16x. I am surprised to see that it writes to CD-RW media at 32x though. It's about time a DVD writer had this feature.

I would've guessed that it's a rebadged NEC-3500A, however, the tray eject button in the picture is rounded.
NEC eject buttons are typically more rectangular style.

That hasn't stopped Ricoh and/or AOpen in the past.

OIC, I suppose we'll have to wait until we get ahold of one of the drives or the firmware then. :D

Nah, definitely not a NEC. I suspect the R in ARR stands for Ricoh because I think their 16x drive will be a Ricoh-design and not some OEM unlike the MP5308 (and MP5163). AOpen has however even claimed they will make this drive themself but it might be that they're handle just the manufacturing.

I thought the same as jsl.

From the Anandtech preview, it seemed to use CAV. Japanese characters are in the screen capture. It probably came from Ricoh, Japan.

I posted about it two days ago.

Uworks is just saying the drive will become available from late July. The Chinese 下 means anytime between 21 and 31 in a month, so I guess it's likely to be next week. The retail price for bulk DUW1608 is rather high at about US$100, 20% higher than LG GSA-4120B which sells about US$80 right now.

Do you have already tested the writing-quality?

Not yet. I got hung up in the packet writing tests. The drive doesn't like my +RW discs.

That´s not a good sign for writing quality :(

Any idea when the review is ready?

Probably next week. I gotta finish up this A08 review first. I went back and retested some stuff with the 1.18 firmware.
