Ok, Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi make their main business about building and selling optical media technology. Most of their profits come from other companies liscensing this technology. However, both Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi continue to manufacturer smaller amounts of media, for sale in the regular market, but it is very expensive, but usually very good quality.
Ritek, CMC, Optodisc, Prodisc, Gigastorage, Princo, Lead Data, MBIL, and Mitsui are big manufacturers, who (are supposed to) license the technology from Mitsuibishi and Taiyo Yuden (some companies just use it and don't pay for it).
Brand names like Maxell, Sony, TDK, JVC, Panasonic, and Pioneer may have manufacturing plants (especially the first 3), but a lot of their media is OEM'd from larger manufacturers, sometimes with a custom stamper so it has their own code and everything.
To find out the disc's ID code, you can download any number of programs. I use LiteON IT's SmartBurn software since it is small and very fast. But some people use programs like DVDInfoPro.
