And that's supposed to be a good thing?

Nexperia chipset based drives seem to produce among the best burns in terms of lower level indirect measurements (asymmetry/jitter) as well as CATS causal PI/PIF measurements.

But I'll bite it, if the Ricoh chipset based version is even better, of course.

However, I must say that my absolute worst experience with cd-burners have been with Ricoh (very unreliable burns, even more unreliable read quality and sub-par durability). I hope that the design will not herit these traits from Ricoh :)

Are there any hope for the users of DDW-082 ??
Any plans to realease a new firmware to fix the bugs in that drive ??

I thing that so many users are avid for that !!!
:-?

NicW author of dvdinfo did some checking with nu tech and its true, the new model 162 will have ricoh chipset, although nu did not tell him this he think the main reason for chipset change was so they dont have the problems liteon is having with all the crossflashing.

So there you have it NU DDW-162 will have Ricoh chipset.

He also asked Nu tech about 082 fw they could not tell him when new fw would be out.

Offcourse DDW-162 will have ricoh chipset or else i wouldn't meantion it #-o ..

For the firmware DDW-081/DDW-082 there's a new one in the making to add more - and + media and get the - more stabilized, when its due... be
patient :P

For reports it seems that the BenQ 16x has firmware issues (philips chipset), for the DDW-162 the release is delayed for they are still finetuning the firmware for the drive.

NU, Aopen, MediaTek etc (using ricoh chipset).. have delayed the release of the DDW-162 for this reason. Drives will most likely enter mass-production on Mid-August.

Thanks for the additional info Ciryadin.

Let's hope it's a great drive, especially in terms of burn quality and media compatibility.

Those features are still not where they should be, as so many of us consumers are mostly looking to shave of 30seconds of burn times and care almost nothing about the burn quality :)

I said ricoh chipset, not ricoh drive.. we construct the drive ourselves in Taiwan factory.

since when ricoh has a own chipset?
i dont think the have a own one because they buy their latest drives at NEC Corp.

They have one. Just because they don't manufacture their own drives any more doesn't mean that they've also exited the chipset business, as the two are somewhat different.

MediaTek?!

Uhm, just because the MP5308 was a rebadged NEC doesn't mean that all Ricoh's coming drives will be NEC OEM's. Ricoh models:

MP5120/25 -> Ricoh
MP5163 -> NEC
MP5240 -> Ricoh
MP5308 -> NEC
MP5316(?) -> Ricoh (according to what I've heard including own chipset).

MediaTek makes drives?

Thats good news !!

:D

The most odd thing about NU firmwares is that the problem isnt burn quality but freezing the drive during burn or spurious read errors.
:-?

I expect that questions will be solved in the next ( or nexts ) realeases.

This is good news, Im sure the nu 162 will be fine drive and I will look forward to nu 082 fw update, I now own both the nu 082 and BenQ 1600 the latest 1600 fw B5G9 seems to do well on the media I have tried. I find RicohR02 burns great at 12x.

What issues are you reffering too?
Anyone in here have any issues with your 16xx drives?
Is the ricoh chipset better than philips?
If so in what way?
Please explain so that we can all understand.

BenQ DW1600A - the only serious issue I've ran into is when I converted it to a DW1620, DVD-R writing has issues. But after all: the DVD-R firmware is not ready yet. Beside this it's an excellent writer (quality wise).

Let's see if the NU could match it - my previous ricoh chipset based writers experience is limited - but as far as I could tell the writing quality has been far from the quality given by the philips chipset/design (when using DVD+R/RW at least).

Let's see if I could get my hands on a NU sample some time in the coming weeks....

I own the 1600 and I did leaked fw update to B7H9, a quick review of what this did.

The Drive is now Dual format. and It can on some media burn -R 4x all my tried for 8x or higher burns have failed. As was stated above this is most likely because its leaked fw and not ready for prime time. The 4x burns on -R 4x media went well, and the scans looked fine. I did try 4x burn to cmc AE1 8x media that locked the drive up in leadout. This media would not burn at 8x and locked the drive about just over 6x on way to 8x p-cav.

As for +R burns this fw seems to have greatly improved +R burns and added some more 16x and 16x media from 8x noticably ricohR02 now burns at 16x and mcc003 now burns at 12x although my test did not make a coaster on this media at max speeds the last 25% of full disk burn did have kprobe level that went past 120 pi and po was 10-15 but these disk did not have any crc read error in dvdinfopro when read with my pioneer 107D.

I don't think so.

1: they are physically very different
2: BenQ drives are based on a philips chipset.
3: The BenQ drives is manufactured in Malaysia.
