Maxell 4x dvd-r made in Taiwan

I just wanted to let everyone know that there are reports that people have seen 15 and 50 packs of Maxell 4x dvd-r made in Taiwan. I read about it at the videohelp media forums.

I know most people bought it because it was made in Japan. If you want made in Japan media, you will have to start looking at the label to make sure that's what your getting.

One guy bought a 50 pack and it was RitekG04. That is very sad news.

Edit: I added a link to the videohelp media forum in case anyone wanted to read about it.

Read my this thread and my reply in it. http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=17115

It's not exactly a new trend, Maxell started packaging "Made in Taiwan" DVD about 2-3 years ago. I think Sony started first... then TDK... then Fuji and now Maxell.

no, this is deeper then just Maxell packaging Taiwanese media in under their brand...

Maxell *DID* use Ritek, then stopped. Maxell's 50pc cakebox is a brand new product. The use of both together would imply either Maxell is repackaging older unsold Ritek stock, or has switched from Taiyo Yuden back to Ritek for OEM'ing again :o

Hopefully there are additional circumstances that I am unaware of, that make things better [-o<

I hope they won't try Ritek to produce their DVD-RAM media.

They wouldn't do that I don't think... DVD-RAM is a huge business for Maxell, and they take quite a lot of pride in being one of the (if not THE) biggest manufacturers of it.

You would be surprised. In the world of business, the pride is nothing when there's no profit to be made... a.k.a. outsourcing.

That was awhile back though. That one guy posted April 28, 2004 and he said it was made in Japan. The new ones say made in Taiwan. That one guy in the forum got Ritek media.

Here are the two links that talk about it. The first one talks about the 50 packs and the second thread talks about the 15 packs.

In the second thread look at what accountwiz says in one of his post.

He said that out of 10 15 packs of Maxell dvd-r, he saw 5 that were made in Taiwan and 5 that where made in Japan.

I hope they will go back to Japan media. I think they may have switched to Tawain media since this is the first time I have heard of Taiwan Maxell dvd-r media. Everytime I use to buy them, they were made in Japan.

Shimman,

Are you sure you -r packs say made in Taiwan? For it to be Ty it has to say made in Japan. The +r is made in Taiwan and is Rioch like you said.

Edit: I added a few words.

I also got a 25pack spindle from Future Shop, also made in Taiwan. I checked to see if I can find any 'Made in Japan' spindles, but there were none...

Well, it looks like Maxell switched. Just great. They expect people to pay the same price for Ritek G04 media compared to Ty or Maxell made media. What are they thinking?

Maybe if people email them they will go back to Japan media. I have already emailed them.

If Maxell dvd-r media is from now on going to be made in Taiwan, I won't buy it. So, they are going to lose out on my money, since I have bought a lot of their dvd-r media in the past.

Since the Ritek G04 is no longer in production, it is VERY unlikely that this is really the case. I sent a request in to Maxell today for info, and they have assured me that all Maxell media is now made in Japan... so either they are wrong (could be) or there is old stock still on the shelves (very likely!). Of course, the 15,000 Maxell DVDRs I just ordered aught to clear this up lickety split... (please let them be Made in Japan.... [-o< )

Not it looks like, but Maxell did a few years ago. However, Maxell is considerably the better out of those switched companies.

*Money* :D What else is there to think? I believe Fuji, Maxell, Sony and other Japanese companies still sell mostly their home country made media in Japan, while they sell mostly Taiwan made media in other parts of world. Specially in North America because of many people liking cheaper media.

dammit.... fifteen thousand Maxell 4x DVD-Rs in 50pc spindles.... *all* made in Taiwan :o

even *AFTER* Maxell assured me that they would be made in their plant in Japan... for the price I paid, I could have had twice as many Ritek 4x DVD-Rs, with a freaking custom silkscreen!! This will NOT end here!

dolphinius_rex,

I'm sorry you got made in Taiwan ones. My heart goes out to you.

From reading at videohelp, I had a feeling that Maxell had changed to Taiwan media. I hadn't seen any Maxell Taiwan dvd-r before, so I thought they were probably new and not old stock. Also, I'm sure those guys that bought the Maxell media visit there stores all the time and would have told us if they saw made in Taiwan media along time ago if it was old stock. I have bought a lot of Maxell dvd-r and it has always been made in Japan.

I had a feeling that Maxell did what the other manufacturers have done. I guess it is about money.

I hoped with all my heart that Maxell would never switch. My worst fears have came true :(

I hope you can return them. If you could, would you please ask Maxell to switch back to made in Japan media? Is there anything we can do to change their minds? I emailed them, but got the typical response. So, my email didn't help.

That is odd. I don't understand how Tyg01 media got in a pack that said it was made in Taiwan. That is the strangest thing I have ever heard. Tyg01 is made in Japan.

i just checked the trash can though i knew i would be scolded by my wife for it & yes, they were made in taiwan;fabrique a taiwan; hecho en taiwan

plextools reports -r as tyg01 general purpose 4x disk

+r as ricohjpn r01 rev 02 4x

maybe maxell did not have made in japan label or was not bothered to made a separate warps; perhaps, tyg01 was indeed made in taiwan by cmc or ritek or whatever; who knows

fyi, i got these from staples with a rather thick raised edged clear dust cover & a black spindle; both had recycle mark with "5" marked; there was "pp" marking; disks were yellow for -r

sorry, i could not get a picture of the shrink wrap because my wife trashed them after scolding at me for a mintue ;)

Hehe, don't worry, I'm meeting with my Maxell Rep tomorrow, and unless the magic shrinkwrap reveals TYG01 media "made in Taiwan", then we are going to have some "words" about what manufacturing locations can mean to important large volume customers who pay a premium for a premium (not plextor) product, and then get the "same old, same old".

As the saying goes:
"You get what you pay for, unless you pay for Maxell and get Ritek"

Ok, I just talked with Maxell.

Basically, they are completely surprised by what's happened. All Maxell reps in North America (and I have the e-mails to prove that!) were told by their superiors that all Maxell DVD-Rs would now be made in Japan, more specifically by their own plant. Not only myself, but big name stores like Futureshop, Bestbuy, London Drugs and so on, have been told to change their advertising to relay this fact.... and NOW they find out, because of me, not through their own channels, that this is not the case, and some shipments will be made in Taiwan, or in best cases elsewhere in Japan. You can imagine that my contacts are rather unhappy at the backlash they can only sit and wait for now....

And Hydrogen, I "told them to stop outsourcing from Taiwan" for you on your behalf as well :P

to those interested, Maxell did offer to take the DVDRs back if it is requested on my part... for myself, if depends on several factors whether I will request this or not.

You need to do it just on principle alone!
Won't be long before it won't just be Ritek in the pak but Princo [-X
