The 812 is the newer drive. In the end, they both can be flashed to an 832s drive for DL capability. Here's the family:
451->851->812->832

In the end, either drive is fine, but if they were the same price, I would get the 812s.

Yes, the NEc is worth it. Or get a LG GSA 4082/4120 or Pioneer DVR 107, top-writers, better than the LiteonĀ“s.

I have both the 832S and 1213S, and they are crap compared to the TDK 440 (NEC 1300) that I own. These 2 Lite-Ons couldn't replace the NEC based drive. Please go for the NEC, I honestly wish I had. :(

I am at the same place. I need a DVD Burner but don't feel like spending a lot for all the new features that I don't need right now.

I have if narrowed down to:
Nec 2500
Lite on 812S
Nu Tech

All the same price. I thought that optorite and NEC were the same drive? IIRC Optorite drives got torn up on their write quality/bad burns.

Eventually I would like to get a drive that can 16+- and +4DL maybe even -DL, but I can't wait. I have tons of stuff that needs to be backed up now that I have been putting off for to long.

I wouldn't buy a Lite On drive if I were you.

I have an Lite On 851s and I don't like it very much. I only got it to do kprobe results.

I like my Pioneer A07. The oem version of that is the Pioneer 107d.

I didn't see the Pioneer 107d in your list, so from your list, I would go with the Nec 2500a.

Anybody have opinions on the Nu Tech drive? Ian has a review for the older + drive, but not the newer +- drive.

Also can the 2500 be flashed to the 2510? The only real difference I can see is DL capability, which is too pricey for me. Any other differences between the two.

hydrogen,
If you know of a place that sells the 107d for between $50-$60 I'd buy it quickly. I usually see it for $80-$90. I also remember reading you couldn't upgrade the firmware forPioneer OEM drives.

I haven't see it cheaper than $83.

If you want a drive in the $50 and $60 range then go for the Nec.

If you buy a Pioneer oem drive from a place like Newegg, I think you can update the firmware on it.

It think people are saying you can't update the firmware on a pioneer drive that comes with a prebuilt computer. They are called oem drives also.

Guys, If I'm wrong, please let me know.

I'm sure dolphin or somone else could confirm what I said.

I think the Nutech drive is a good +r burner, but not a good -r burner. I might be wrong, but that's what I have heard.

Do you care about -r?

I think you can update the 2500a drive to a 2510a drive. I'm not sure how though. You would have to ask somone else about that.

Also, the Nec drive has Herries firmwares so that is a plus for the Nec drive.
