LG 4120B - Burning only at 4x DVD-R and 4x CD-R

Perhaps you guys could help me out here. The N.A. tech support was not much of help. I have the Drive specified above and I can only backup my DVD movies at 4x only on DVD-R media (Ridata 8x DVD-R) and 4x only on CD-R for my music files. The firmware is A102 and the drive is set to Secondary Master. I am using Nero Ultra 6 updated for burning.

Thanks in advance guys!
Sardius.

On Lg Canada support site, there is a newer firmware for that drive. It is A104. It might help.

I read on a CDFreaks forum post (don't remember URL, sorry) that even with the new A104 firmware, the 4120B can't burn to Ritek R05 DVD-R disks at 8x. I have the same drive and the same disks you do, and at 8x my movie backups worked for me in my home DVD player, but would crash PowerDVD every time. I lowered the write speed to 4x and now everything is flawless. These are pretty good disks I think, just have an issue with the 4120 right now. I expect a future firmware (not 104 though =( ) will fix this.

Sorry guys, I was away for a while.
I installed the new firmware A104 as told by LG techs, but still no good.
They told me there should be another/newer firmware greater than A104 coming at the end of August...we will see what happens then, otherwise I am returning this sucker. :(

Lots of ODD manufacturers limit Ritek G05 speeds to 4x; the quality must not be that great. Get youself some higher quality 8x media (Maxell, Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ricoh) and you should be able to burn at 8x no problem. I'd also try some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs.
