Aside from writing quality, what are your needs? Speed? Media compatibility? DVD-RAM support? 4x DVD+R DL writing speeds? Give us more info.

If I were to buy another drive, I'd get the NEC 3500.
I think DL support is a good 'forward compatability' item to get now.

I've got an NEC 1100a and its been rock solid stable, especially with the modded firmware from Etna. It was fine with out modded firmware, I just had cause to get region auto-reseting as I had R2 discs I watch.
