Yes it's official. You can get it from Pioneer Japan or Pioneer Australia's Firmware pages.

ok this drive sucks. no wonder i got it for 100 bucks. i just updated the firmware to 1.6 thinking it would solve my media recognition problem but it didnt. i have tried verbatim 4x dvd+r that was made in taiwan, ridata 4x dvd+r that was also mad in taiwan and riteks g4 4x dvd-r. the drives doesnt recognize any burnt dvds i made before either. it does read cds though. im going to return this and get a refund.

you should read reviews before making a purchase like that

if 4x media is what your looking to burn, go with pioneer 107

also burns a lot of 4x dvd-r media at 8x with great results, namely the ritek g04 you said you bought

PIONEER A108

Is it really the drive. I have the same Pioneer A-108 (NewEgg) and using the Ridata 4X & 8X DVD+R media, I have successully burned 12 discs with zero failure. What burning software is being used? I'm using the latest Nero 6 released last week.

You might have a bad drive. You should probably send it back and get another one.

luckily Pioneer doesn't have a reputation for having 3 or more bad drives in a row (unlike the Plextor 712a  )

i cant use any program because the drive says there's no disc inside. i go to my computer and check the contents of the disc and its as if there's nothing inside.

machoboy6,

Just exchange it for another one. It might be a bad drive.

Also, have you checked the bottom of the disc to see if any data was actually burned to the disk?

Does it recognize a dvd movie? If it does, then there maybe a problem with the burner not burning.

What store did you buy it from?

When you say it won't read a burnt dvd that was previously burnt, do you mean by another drive or something?

What happens if you burn a disc with the Pioneer? Does it read back in the Pioneer and any other dvd drives you have?

Do you have another dvd burner in your computer and does it work? If so, I would sent the Pioneer back and get a new one. I'm sure it is just a bad drive. It happens :(

i got it from newegg.com and returning it for a refund. told them it was defective. the drive just doesnt read any kind of dvds. i tried movies and data dvds that have been burnt and working on my pioneer 105 with no luck. even with blank dvds the drive fail to recognize it. so i cant tell you if any data is burnt on the dvd because the drive thinks there no dvd media at all inside even though there is. it just spins for like a minute with the green light on everytime i put any kind of dvds in. so im almost positive it was a bad drive. im just going to wait if other people have the same problems or a drive with similar or better specs comes out.

Like hoxlund said it sounds like a bad drive.

I would buy another one and see if it works.
