Up to which speed in external exclosure?

Hi there... I currently own a Pioneer 106 in an external Firewire (oxford 911 chipset)/USB 2.0 enclosure. So far, never had any bad burns and am quite satisfied. However, I am interested in taking a look at the 8x or 12x burners (like the Pioneer 107 or NEC 2510). Will they work in an external enclosure? Anybody has specific experiences? Thanks in advance for your help.

Here, 12x is the limit for USB2, 16x for Firewire. YMMV, the controller has a huge impact on speeds, not just the chipset in the external case. There are some truly crappy controllers around. Likewise, an overloaded PCI bus can cause bottlenecks too.

thanks for the replies. Has anybody ever had a NEC 2510 in an external enclosure... somehow I remember that the NEC does not seem to work there properly? Between NEC 2510 and Pioneer 107 - which one would you recommend?
