BTW, it would never have been possible without the ASPI Spy guide published by cdrlabs some years ago :-=)

Nice job Alex. I'll give it a shot when I get home.

It's good to hear that article is still useful. :D

This isn't backward compatible with older LG drives is it?

1) I don't have any other drives to test with
2) I've obtained the necessary command to send to the drive by spying on Nero's aspi traffic with and without bitsetting, and have wasted like 5 dvd+r discs till I had the necessary log files (i was too stupid to create a right log file...), and another 5 discs to extract the right command from the logs the burner requires (try a command -> burn with dvd decryper -> crap -> try another one -> burn disc with dvd decrypter -> crap ... etcc ... -> success!).
3) Nero doesn't allow bitsetting on older LG drives, so there is nothing anyone could spy on, even if those LG drives should support bitsetting, which i seriously doubt.

yes, very useful. Please never ever remove it!

And you could use fPLScsi to get SPTI support and even support for Linux, Unix, Mac OS, etc... http://nil.rpc1.org/ The DVDZone sample code might help.

So what does the program do? It instructs the drive what booktype to use for future burns?

there is a readme, and i don't have any linux here. Someone could easily hack cdrecord to do that as well.

The command to send is
(10 Bytes) FC 00 2B 52 54 42 00 00 04 00
with a data area of
00 00 00 00

Thanks Alexnoe, this is really awesome!!

LG should give you a free drive or 3 in payment for making their drive competitive in this market :D

I'd also accept some dvd+r dl discs for free :P

Do you have to enable it before each burn (like ever time)? Do I have to do it (enable bitsetting within your program) with a instance of Nero open or any time? Thanks for the cool app :D

Nero? Huh? What kind of crap do YOU have on your hard disc for other purposes than spying on bitsetting commands?

Concerning the rest of your question, that's point #3 in the readme, and i'm 99% sure dvdinfopro works the same way

dvdinfopro v2.62 freeware or v3.13 can show you the current setting of the drives book type. Testing it, it seems to stay in the set mode until changed.

Added the Nero log files to the download directory, just to show what stuff you are working with when doing things like this :)

I have a little problem whit bitsetting on my GSA-4120B. The booktype changing doesn't work at all. I have tried A104 and N0AD firmwares and i am using the newest version of nero(x.x.x.20). I have also tried DVDinfopro software but if i set booktype to DVD-ROM That dowsn't work. After burning DVDinfopro says that the booktype is DVD+RW. I have also copied that Alexnoe's patch into the neso:s foldet and ran that.

Drive works otherwise very goon and that DVD+RW disc works very good, but the bitsetting doesn't work. Also DVD-RA discs works very good.

Newet ASPI is installed. And the disc is Maxell DVD+RW.

I am from Finland and my english isn't so good, byt i guess that it doesnt matter :)

Maybe someone on this forum could help me ;)

Now i found an intresting info from one other forum. Is that true that there's no available ANY firmware for GSA-4120B which supports bitsetting to +RW discs? Only to +r and +R DL..

If this is true is there any way to change booktype for +RW disc?

from what I understand, you CANNOT change the book type on RW...only +r +r DL

Not true, I've done bitsetting on +RW media before... but not on the LG 4120B.

Dolph, how's that 832S of yours working? Any +R incompatiblities? I've been having a boatload of PI/PIF errors on RicohJPNR01, at 8X. I'm burning my next one at 4X and checking. 4X -R burns (CMCMAGE.01) are excellent #-o
