LITEON 811S i hated it and did not get good burns with 8x
NEC 2500A burns 2x DVD-R's at 4x and 2X DVD+R's at 8x with decent quality.
BENQ 800A does the same as NEC with cheap rated blanks, good burns
it hard to pick between BENQ 800A and NEC 2500A

I have to give the best i owned to NEC 2500A

BenQ DW822A, great burning quality with dvd+r media (I don't buy any dvd-r media anyway) and cheap!

so far i love my pioneer 107, about to switch to prodisc 8x hub printable dvd-r media

so far if i had to guess, i would say ive put about close to 1,000 pieces of dvd-r through my pioneer

a good 800 of that would be ritek g04 media

NEC 2510

So far I have tested with
LiteOn 411S.
Pioneer A05.
BTC 1008IM.
NEC 2500A.

The 2500A has been the best drive hands down.
There is no room for arguments.

The best? Until a few months ago, I did most of my burning on a Ricoh 5125. Wasn't the fastest, but it did the job well. I finally replaced it with a NEC ND-2500A clone.

A NEC 2510 bougth 85 euros...
First DVD+R DL disc burned @ 2.4X with DVD-ROM bitsetting : high compatibility on 6 old and new DVD readers. Magic ! Thanks NEC, thanks MKM !

My vote will probably be for BenQ DW822A. Excellent quality and speed (also overspeeds a lot media with original firmware) with all DVD+R/RW media. Decent for DVD-R too - but not the best.

But I still think I will get a new favourite writer in the future...as there is a lot more coming.

tied between the NEC-2500a and the Pioneer DVR-107, both good burners for different applications.

The PX-712a is very good for ripping pressed DVDs really fast too! But I've found it too poor a reader for ripping a lot of burned DVDRs at 12x (but it depends who burned them )

The LiteOn 1213 will rip it with the best of them, especially with some, er, modified firmware. I've done a bit of 16x ripping with mine, but 12x usually winds up being faster. Best reading drive I've ever had.

Best burner: NEC-2500/2510, no contest with Herrie's FW.

Plextor 708a writing quality is great as long as you use the recommended brands of media like TAIYO YUDEN (FUJI DVD-R), MAXELL DVD-R, VERBATIM, IMATION DVD+R (RICOH). I have a Liteon 411s@811s drive that burns ok but not as great as the Plextor drive. The Liteon has higher pi/po kprobe scans compared to the Plextor drive. I also have a Pioneer 107d drive but haven't found a permanent home for it yet. LOL!

And what about my results makes you think that? I can burn Ritek, Mitsubish and Taiyo Yuden media fine.. that isn't the problem. The problem is that other then that it really sucks, and I use more then 3 media types.

Plextor PX-712A. Burns fast, and best writing quality drive I have ever owned.

I think it is just fair to evaluate the drive unit one has.

I can't review the drive unit some happy chap has gotten after three RMA returns :)

I have the Plex 712 I got off the store, I use it and evaluate that unit.

It is somewhat discomforting to know that there seems to be such a big variance in media compatibility between units from the same manufacturing version (i.e. random serial numbers are good, some ok and some bad).

Or that's what it looks like to me, I only have one drive myself, so I have not been able to verify this myself.

I have seriously considered the px-712a for my first dvd writer but the recent posts about qa problems scared me into waiting. Although making backups of pressed dvds would be it's job 95% of the time so I might not even notice any deficiencies.

LG 4120B. Judging from the tests in the C'T, its write quality is better than the one of overpriced plextor drives.

I have the Plex 712a and have been perfectly happy. So far it's recoginized every disk I've put into it. I have yet to have a hic-up on anything it's burned.

I do see lots of 'amour for that Nec 2500 and am curious especially with Ian liking it.

I'd like to ask Ian how the Nec, Plex 712, the best Pioneer, and the best Liteon stack up in a summary; just very briefly what area's they compare about the same and what drives top basic categories like burn quality, rip speed and such.

For me burn quality is most important.

Is there an external USB 2.0 version of the NEC 250 drive that does Double Layer? I have the new Sony and might return it if there is one, and if the NEC is as good as you guys say it is.

just buy the 3500 nec and put it in an external usb case

You can put any drive in an external box, 2500/2510 included. But for a few more $ you can have the 3500, and burn DL at 4x.
