There isn't a lot of info out there. Pioneer hasn't said when or if it will be released. Current rumor is that it will be on the DVR-A09 and will be released 1Q 2005. That's a RUMOR.

There have been many tests and it depends upon a) the player and b) whether or not you set the book type to DVD-ROM. I'm sure it might also depend upon the media used, but there's only a few types out right now.

if dvd-r dl media does come out how will it be with compatibility since you cannot set the booktype to dvd-rom?
setting the booktype in dvd+r dl is definetely need. unless you are willing to chance that expensive dvd and see whether it plays in your dvd player as dvd+r dl or not.

+1, I set the booktype of my first Verbatim DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM, and it plays fine on 6 different old and new players. Bitsetting IS needed.
For DVD-R DL
if it becomes available in the future
, they have to find something as good...

Pioneer can never catch up with Philips engineers, by the time Pioneer releases dvd dl-r, Philips will probably have dvd dl+r 6x or 8x out...

I've heard the 1st quarter of '05 for the release of DVD-R DL media, but don't hold your breath.

Also consider how expensive 2X and/or 4X DVD-R DL media will be compared to 2.4X and/or 4X DVD+R DL media by the time it is released!

true...but it will have to be competitive since +r prcies will have fallen by then....if -r is not priced right no one will buy and +r more economical.

While that would make sense, DVD+R DL when it debuted was ridiculously overpriced, yet some folks "had to have it," and paid the price of admission.

true but that is because there was no dl media before + or - so it was a big novelty. this time around could be different since most people will have to wonder about the compatibility of dvd-r dl because it doesn not bit set like +.
