Would you recommend the NEC 3500A if it was my only DVD drive? Have the reading problems the older 25xx models had been fixed? Because I could also get a Pioneer DVR-108 if it hasn't.

I have both and though I have not completed my write tests on them. Subjectively I would recommend the Pioneer over the NEC. It just seesm to have a better quality builtthan the 3500A.

Anybody know if 3500 inherits the "bad reading" problems of Nec ND25x0?

Not all 2500's have reading issues, and the 3500 reads at 16x with no troubles.

It may well be so that not all 25x0 series have developed known reading problems (yet), but the problem is prevalent enough (imho) to call it a problem of the 25x0 series.

Also, according to Emperor (at CDRINfo), Nec has already acknowledged the reading problems with Nec 25x0 series.

As such, I think it is fair to ask if anybody has had similar problems with Nec 3500:

Discs burned with 3500a at normal (not max or over the nominal speeds) with official non-hacked firmware on quality media, which scan beautifully in all other drives and work in other readers, fail to be even recognized on 3500.

Well, we'll soon see as people start to log experiences. I for one hope the problem is fixed.
