MBIL on par with Taiyo Yuden?

I thought I'd share this excerpt from an e-mail I received recently... some parts blocked out to protect personal information:

My name is **** ******* and I am the marketing director for ******** ***** ***. The North American distributor for Moser Baer India (MBI) who is #3 in the world in optical media production, right behind Ritek and CMC. However, I'm sure you will find our media of much higher quality, more on par with a Taiyo Yuden or other A-grade media, but at a much more competitive price.

I would like to send you some samples of our latest CD-R and DVD-R/+R media. I'm sure you will find them of very high quality and reliability. All of our media is fully licensed with Philips (www.licensing.philips.com) so there are not royalty or patent issues with MBI media.

Our DVD media is essentially the same as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Pioneer or any other top Japanese media because we are all paying the exact same licensing fees to Mitsubishi Chemical (4x product) or Fuji (8x product) for their dye and substrate design.

I had a couple of good laughs over this.

I know they've improved... but I don't think they are as good as they claim to be :-?

Other than your buddy at Optodisc, I have yet to find any media manufacturer that is honest about their discs.

If I can.... I don't always get all the free handouts, but there is a good chance I'll get at least a couple pieces to play with.... I hope!

Moser Baer makes good media, but it is definitely NOT "essentially the same as Taiyo Yuden".
hahaha!

I am definitely interested in seeing how their 8X media performs.
I expect it will work well, possibly even at 12X or 16X on some drives. :)

They are expected out in a couple of weeks or so.. my uncle has an office adjoining their plant in Gurgaon, near Delhi, so he gets the media dirt cheap. Funny thing is, my Lite-On actually burns well on their 4X -R media.

Well now I find that MCC media is identical to MBI media.. I got some MBI media (2 types) and it turned out to be MCC media. They even look identical to the thin line that starts at the lead in area which I haven't seen on any other media. And there is one difference, MCC -R media will burn @ 4x with no changes while the MBI media wont. So either MBI is making fakes or MBI is owned by MCC.. Which is not surprising. Lots of Japanese companies go to India and buy a major stake in some company and change the name to sell stuff. I think these will burn @ 8x with write strategy change just like the MBI media. MBI-Pro media quality is on par with any Japanese media like Ricoh or MCC. But costs just as much. While the OEM costs much less and seems quality is lower as well. MBI just needs to keep those Japanese managers around so the guys dont take their rice and curry into the clean rooms.

Oh bhairavp, someone offered me some media for rs19.. in 100 lots.. But...

Wrong on both counts.... MBIL is one of the companies MCC uses to OEM their media. MCC has VERY limited production capacity on their own, so they use plants like CMC, MBIL, and Prodisc to help make up the extra production volume they can't handle on their own. MBIL is not making fakes, and is not owned by MCC... they are licensing MCC technology. This is the same as Prodisc, who also licenses Fuji and MCC technology.

The fact is, many MANY common discs carry a different plants' MID code then the plant that actually manufactured them. Not a majority of discs I don't think, but a pretty strong minority.

I'd rather see a tranfer rate test done at 12x or faster personally. Every LiteOn drive (not just model #) scans discs differently, so it's impossible to make a good disc quality assessment on a K-Probe scan alone (in my opinion). Also, LiteON drives are VERY forgiving when it comes to reading discs.

OK I confirmed this with the dealer.. He said he ordered from the factory Moser baer blanks and this is what he got, bill said Moser baer blanks.. In fact I got 2 batches of them and they are identical except the Moser baer's will not burn @ 4x on my liteon 812 with ANY firmware but the Mitsubishi ones works fine. I have tried over 100 disks so its not from just 1 batch. Moser is selling which ever one is on hand.. Now if they would just label what the media id was on the disk on the cover it woudl amke life easier.
