Z-CLV....why is it so disliked by many?

I see many posters saying how they wish a drive wasn't writing in z-clv mode and wish it were p-cav. Why is this. Does the stoppage between zones in z-clv really cause that many issues in media readability in other commercial and non-writer players?
Like if a user is just gonna be using the writer for backup of information and nothing else...meaning movies or games...is z-clv over p-cav really something to consider?

No, the overall average writing speed is usually faster with P-CAV or CAV. Not to mention, changing speeds can add a few seconds to the overall writing time.

Thanks Ian...so as far as the quality of a burn...cav, pcav or zlcv has no real world effect then on the final burn?

You really can't generalize writing quality by writing method. I've seen good and bad results from both Z-CLV and P-CAV drives. You're better off asking about a certain drive.

PCAV or CAV usually averages faster times. The Plextor 712, for example, is faster at 12x PCAV than the Pioneer is at 16x ZCLV. The reason is the Pioneer doesn't change it's ZCLV from 12x to 16x until 4.1GB into the burn. So it basically is a 12x drive.
CAV-Constantant angular velocity--the motor stays the same speed througout the burn, so the data throughput increases as the circumferance increases.
PCAV-partial CAV--reaches the maximum using CAV and then runs at a constant CLV speed
ZCLV-zoned constant linear velocity. The throughput is constant in zones, then jumps to the next highest zone, i.e., 6x, 8x, 12x 16x.

Ahh...this brings up fond memories...of the
Great Z-CLV vs. P-CAV Debate of some 1-2 years ago (that was way back then, in the days of
CD writers!)
oh...the length discussions...the arguments of which has better writing quality...the flame wars...

I still have a old LG GCE-8240B on my old computer.Its more than a couple of years old and I have burned countless discs on it.Never faced any problem with any disc burned on it.Still works beautifully.
