It's kinda odd that it writes to DVD-R at only 12x.. but then again, there isn't a lot of media yet that works at 16x.

It came out a few months ago. Microcenter has been selling OEM version for $100.

I had the same thought. :D
They could've at least boosted a TYG02 to 16X and called it a "16X DVD-R writer".
Oh well, at least they don't toss around false claimers like Artec.

I doesn't sound like a winner judging by the specs... :(

no winner, but if samsung 16x drive can write beautifully with many medias, less than winning spec can be forgiven easily. imo, samsung is focused on oem market

It's a bummer so far :(

First the retail box states 48X CD-R - but it is 40x only #-o

Second - no discs works at 16x out of those I tried on it.

TY 02 works at 12x

Philips 16x at 12x

Ritek 16x at 4x!!! :(

And writing quality with most discs is not so great.

LOL @ Samsung 8x DVD+R - becomes coaster when written by samsung :D It's like buying original parts for you car - just to find that do not fit...... HEHE

So I'll say it's not a good writer atm. This was with the latest TS03 firmware.

Yeah isn't that great when a company ensures that its' own products will work together?

Same thing happened with Traxdata!
Traxdata DL DVD writer (rebadged NEC 2510A)
Traxdata DVD+R DL media (RITEKD01)
Not compatible with eachother when using official firmwares!
(although I have been told that official Ritek DL support will be added to the next 2510A firmware)
