You should know that there are 2 version of this great burner the 108 and the A08.

It has been discovered that only the A08 version can use the pioneer 'quiet utility' which does more than quieten the drive it can also turn on 'performance' which enables fast ripping speeds of DVD up to and beyond x12.

The oem version of this drive does not have the same ability [-X

Yep, this is something that a lot of people don't realize. I've seen a number of 108 reviews and they're showing pictures of the A08. Not the same drive people.

Of course, there's hacked firmware for the 108 that will remove the rip lock.

DVR-108 is the bulk or OEM version of the DVR-A08. The DVR-A08XL is compatible with the Quiet Utility while the DVR-A08 and DVR-108 are not. This is how it was for the 107D series, and how I assume it is for the 108 series unless Pioneer is no longer selling the plain A08 in retail boxes.

All of the drives should show up the same way in Device Manager or in drive identification software.

Why not just run the hacked firmware then?

The hacked firmware mostly always one version behind the pioneer official. I always like to have the latest. I was thinking of buying it anyway before i bought the one ive got.

Where does one find this firmware? Or how do I search for it?
Is it the same one by >NIL in his nXall firmwares? His DVR-108 FAQ states that a 108 cannot be turned into a A08XL. If the better version was $20 more I'd go for it. But it's almost double the price. Boooo!

I'm thinking of getting either the 108 or the A08. Should I pay almost double the price for the A08?? Anyone??
