Hi there

I'm looking for feedback from those who have had great success backing up used DVD-video discs.

My Pioneer 107D reads and rips fine but when I try to write I nearly always get CR Errors and the write process stops or the discs are coasters! Reviews I've read say it's a known shortfall with the 107D (and also the NEC 2500)- very fussy about Video disc surface quality. I have tried a variety of ripping and burning software and upgraded my firmware. No help unfortunately.

If you have no trouble with used DVD discs please let me know what DVD hardware you are ripping with. The hardware that the reviews suggest is Plextor 708A or Sony DRU-530A. Lite-On 812/832/Sony U18A get so so reviews when it comes to accurate reading of scratched DVD-video discs.

Cheers

In the thread someone mentioned the Aopen 1648 DVD-ROM to have very good correction abilities (below). Also Cdrinfo.com gave the benQ DW1620 burner good error correction score.

packetloss:
I base it on a very detailed review by the well known german c't magazine (8/2004). I could scan the review and post it here, but that would be against copyright laws. I can however post the results here, and other people who read it can confirm it if necessary. Here is a comparison between the Aopen and the Toshiba SD-M1802.

Error Correction

Special scratched discs (CD, DVD, DVD9) are tested. The test shows how many sectors of those discs can still be read by the drives (in percent).

Aopen 1648/AAP:

CD: 95.9%
DVD: 99.9%
DVD9: 90.3%

Toshiba SD-M1802

CD: 83.8%
DVD: 49.6%
DVD9: 82.0%

The Aopen was the only drive with a recovery rate of over 90% in all three categories (CD, DVD, DVD9).

And having tested quite a few drives myself over the years (including the Toshiba, LiteOn and Pioneer drives), I can confirm this result this with personal experience.

Thanks for the input. I've resorted to writing at 2x! And it seems to work even when material was ripped at full speed. Must be a write error after all. Maybe my 107D is just a lemon.

The Aopen sounds like the machine for me.

I'll look into Nils 12x firmware you mentioned. Thanks again for your input.

IF you are getting CRC errors the disks can be repaired by using DVD Resuce which is part of DVDXCopy. Another way of burning these are by using a NT command called ROBOCOPY. Robocopy is used to copy all folders.
Here is an Example : Being that ROBOCOPY.exe is in the root of c drive
c:\Robocopy e:\video_ts c:\dvd
What this does is copy the whole directory to a folder on c drive named DVD. Then use Nero and select MAKE DVD and place all the files in the VIDEO_TS directory and burn away.
Make sure you use your DVD reader to copy to the hard drive as does not always work with the burner.
I use a Lite-on DVD reader model SOHD-167T and used the firmware update posted in my other thread by http://codeguys.rpc1.org
Also my burner is a pioneer 108. I did have a Ricoh 4x and worked fine as well.
