DVD-RAM speeds - will they increase soon?

anyone know any info about the future of DVD-RAM speeds?
Ian? dolphiniusRex?

the recent GSA-4120B bumped the speed up to 5x.
now i'm considering buying a DVD burner (at last) but i think i prefer the Pioneer or the NEC over the LG. i think they're better in terms of burning quality (or maybe i'm wrong?)..or maybe wait a bit longer for the A09 with DVD-R DL.
but if DVD-RAM speeds are going to stay put at 5x for quite a while, i might get the 4120 now for the -RAM, and wait longer for a 'proper' drive - better burning quality, faster DL (2.4 of the LG i don't like...)

Hitachi and Maxell are hoping to get DVD-RAM speed up to 16x... but getting media support up to that speed will be very tough! I think 5x is going to be around for a while, and maybe sometime mid next year we might finally start seeing 16x DVD-RAM? Maxell of course has stated it'll be ready early next year... but according to their original statements to me, I should have had Maxell DVD+R9 media for testing months ago, and Maxell 8x DVD±R media 4-6 weeks ago as well! (they're a little slow!).

In short, I think 5x DVD-RAM will be around for a little while

Thats not possible. The technology will evolve slowly.IMO dolphinius_rex was just stating the future speeds of the DVD-RAM technology.
It will take quite a long time for DVD-RAM to reach that speed.

I know of no other planned speeds.... Maxell wanted to completely jump from 2x to 5x as well, but ended up producing 3x media for Panasonic, and eventually brought out 3x DVD-RAM for North America on the same shipment that brought in 5x DVD-RAM for North America.

It's possible we might see an 8x or 12x DVD-RAM disc, (or both) but Maxell has not discussed this with me at this point. They want to focus on making DVD-RAM as fast as possible as quickly as possible.... but Maxell is very bad at bringing things out quickly (in North America at least!).
