Do you already use this new firmware in the upcoming review?

Not worth retesting for that.

Just curious about the current firmware and it's general burn quality on oversped media on both -R and +R...

With B7K9 I believe CMC and Verbatim 4x DVD+Rs can be burned at 8x. I don't know of any 4x DVD-Rs that can be overclocked. There are several 8x DVDRs that can be burned at 12x or 16x. Pretty much any Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Sony, or Daxon code can be kicked up a notch or two from 8x. CMC 8x can also be overclocked I think.

Thanks for that. But I was looking for the "quality" of the burns...
I can wait...

emperor at cdrinfo-forum wrote:Ok here is some clearer information about the mentioned firmware:

- B7L9 (DVDInfo Pro - PI/PO faster scanning speed)
- B7I9 (BenQ TE/FE tool support)

The above firmware versions are beta version. They are not an official firmware. The upcoming [B7M9] will include

- Faster PI/PO scanning speed (suitable for CD-DVD Speed v3.40 or newer & DVDInfo Pro v3.30 or newer)
- Media TE/FE signal test (BenQ tool)
- Improve the compatibility for DVD-R/RW media

The new firmware is still in it's beginning stages. This is why the faster testing and 4x dual layer burning has been seperated into 2 different versions for the moment, so that DVDInfoPro could be developed around it, without holding up production of the other features. Of course everything will be combined in the official release which will be out later.

I'll keep people posted as I learn more

Wow... I can only get that with Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+Rs.... you aren't using Plextor brand Taiyo Yuden are you?

I'm using the newest fuji disks, minus, made in Japan. Best Buy Had a good sale on both types last week. I had heard they worked fast in both the NEC 3500 I have and the BenQ 1600/1620, plus my dvd settop recorder uses minus so it's been a win win for me so far. I should have gotten some of the plus too.
When they get the minus working better with crappy media and start adding 4x at 8x (I hope) this drive will be almost perfect, too bad it wont do DL at 4x.
Mine is a upgraded 1600 by the way.

sale at best buy again for fuji dvd-r or dvd+r, dvd-r some packs were made in taiwan some in japan. i picked up the japan pack its tyg02. did a data disc in cd/dvd speed. burn time is around 7:00. but it does show speed reaching 16x. funny thing is I had some mcc and it burned at 12x faster than it did tyg02. lead in and lead out time seems to be taking quite long at times with dvd-r media, not sure of dvd+r as I have been burning more dvd-r lately.

here are some picks
this is mcc @12x

tyg02 @16x and below the scan for it.

http://server3.uploadit.org/files/S33K3 ... g0216x.JPG

Perhaps as I mentioned the problem is in the lead-in and lead-out time. the scan @16x is quite nice. did another data disc for good measure and time was around the same 7:00 and so was the scan results.

Yeah... for some reason the BenQ DW1620 has to work a little harder on TYG02... probably because there is so much counterfeit TYG02 media out there, so it has extra checks built into the write strategy? I don't think the leadin/leadout is particularily longer then with DVD+Rs though.

does the lead in/out time vary with the media?
if the lead in/out time is same for both then it is pretty slow and should definetely be addressed.

I don't think the Lead In and Lead Out varies with the media, but the burn time deffinatly does because of the WOPC. I've seen the BenQ DW1620 spend 30 seconds at the 1.5GB mark deciding whether or not to try burning the disc at 12x or not... but that was fixed with later firmwares.
