Pansonic DVD-RAM is made by Maxell I believe.

From what I've been told, Maxell and Optodisc make some of the best DVD-RAM, but I've never tried either... or ANY DVD-RAM types yet :P

Panasonic has been flawless for me on the LG GSA-4082B and 4120B as well as a variety of Panasonic home video recorders such as the DMR-E85H.

Optodisc manufactures DVD-RAM for Maxell according to this article.

Yup... Optodisc does manufacture some of Maxell's DVD-RAM media... but none of the stuff I've seen. Unless Optodisc somehow doesn't have to label their stuff as being made in Taiwan? because all the Maxell DVD-RAM I've seen has been Made in Japan  . The problem is, Maxell sells a LOT of DVD-RAM, and doesn't have a lot of manufacturing volume, so they outsource to Optodisc. This is one of the reasons why Maxell and Optodisc are considered the two strongest makers of DVD-RAM media... although many don't know just how strong Optodisc is in the DVD-RAM market

Already available

No, seriously, they've been available for almost 3-4 weeks now, the only reason you don't see them in retail stores is because most places have an overstock of 2x/3x DVD-RAM. The pricing is about 2x-2.5x the price of 2x/3x DVD-RAM (2x and 3x DVD-RAM are the same price!).

I'd have some myself right now if I had a drive with DVD-RAM burning capabilities :(

Simultaneously with the announcement of the DMR-E95H, Panasonic released news of its new 5x DVD-RAM discs for the next generation of faster DVD drives and recorders, including DVD Multi drives. The new discs are said to "offer a significant leap in data transfer speed over current rewritable DVD-RAM discs." The new discs will be available in 4.7GB and 9.4GB capacities, in either cartridge or non-cartridge configuration. Rewrite capability is up to 100,000 uses.

I've been waiting for Panasonic to release their 5x DVD-RAM discs since May! Is there anywhere online that I can order the Maxell 5x discs?

Thanks!

sorry, I don't know of anyone currently selling them retail... all I know is that both Maxell America, and Maxell Canada have something like 40,000pcs to share of the stuff, sitting in warehouses across North America, waiting for orders.

If it weren't for the fact that customs between the US and Canada suck right now, I'd offer to let you order through me :-?

There needs to be competition before you can have a competitive price  I'm sure that as soon as Bestbuy starts carrying it, they'll make my *cost* the regular price :o
