How significant is it that none of the information on the 716A mentions Mt Rainer? The 712A spec sheet mentions it.

Not very significant. No drive supports DVD+MRW. The standard is still not set and won't be software supported until the next MS OS release, whenever that will be. There are 4 or 5 major features that any device has to meet to be MRW compliant, and no vendor is going to bust his hump to meet these features if the command set is still in draft format and the OS is still beta.

OK, it makes sense that DVD+MRW is not an issue. But, the PX-716A has some pretty fancy specs for CD burning too, and it might easily be the choice of someone who is only going to have one drive. (Yeah, I know three or four drives seems to be the minimum for folks here, but just maybe that's a bit out of the main stream?)

Nothing that I can see, but what was there to add? The 712 has all the features of the Premium, as far as I can see.

But, from what I can see, the PX-716A appears not to support CD-MRW. Or Multi-session, for that matter.

Compare the "Recording CD Modes" from the PX-712A data sheet:
Track-at-once, Disc-at-once, Packet Write (variable and fixed)
Multi-session, Session-at-once, CD-MRW (Mt. Rainier)

to those from the PX-716A data sheet:
Track-at-Once, Disc-at-Once, Packet Write (variable and fixed), Session-at-Once

I don't see why it wouldn't support Multi-session. I haven't seen a drive that doesn't in years.

All Plextor drives support multi-session and Mt. Rainier, including the PX-716.

Will the 716SA be released close to the release date of the 716A ? or will it be released mutch more later ?

In the Plextor site there isn't any reference to a 'SA' model for the 716 drive :(

The SATA version will most likely be released 1 to 2 months after the IDE version of the 716 drive is released.
