MP3 DVD question

I am using Nero 6 to burn mp3 dvds. Regardless of whether I use DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs, I can play the discs on my APEX 1200 but I cannot play them on my Yamaha CDC-6660. The error message is "disc not recognized" or something similar.

The Yamaha can play MP3 CDs and it can play the video and slide-show DVDs I have created (regardless of -r or +r standard). Its specs say it is able to read DVD+Rs, +RWs, and all kinds of CDs as well.

Is there something I should do differently to get it to recognize an MP3 DVD?

Lotsa drives can't recognise MP3 DVDs, regardless of the DVD format used. Methinks you're out of luck.

Many DVD players, even those that can play MP3 CDs, can NOT
play MP3 DVDs.

Unfortunately nobody has reported on the 6660 at videohelp.com's DVD
players section.

EDIT: Looks like bhairavp posted in the meantime - while I was editing my post.

Thank you. I thought that perhaps there was something in the way that I was burning the DVDs that could be adjusted.

I'm happy knowing that my player might just be typical.

Well there is a way to burn a CD data disk.. I have like 3 of them, but dont ask me how I did it. The disk shows up as CD data with 4 gigs on them instead of the usual DVD data disk.

But you can try only burning with under 1 gig of data and see if the disk is recognized. The early clone players checked to see if it was a CD or DVD disk by checking the size.

This seems to be a licensing issue.

I have yet to see a single name brand dvd player that plays mp3 files off a UDF dvd-r data disc.

Only cheap chinese/taiwanese/korean brands manage this.

None of the big name brands (Pioneer, Sony, Philips, etc) that I know of are able to do this.

According to user reports at videohelp, there are players from Denon, Onkyo, JVC, Panasonic, Philips (Magnavox too), Pioneer, RCA. Samsung, Sony and Toshiba that play DVD-MP3 discs.

Weird. I have a Pioneer 366SA, which is said to read DVD-MP3 discs. No cigar, doesn't work here.

bhairavp:
It may depend on how they were burned too?

Let me test my DV-563A; it reportedly can play DVD MP3 discs.

4438MB data DVD disc. UDF,IIRC, in Nero.
I've also tried +RWs, bookmarked to DVD-ROM. No go..

Also, that's a nice player you have! 563.. plays SACDs and DVD-As too, right?

I've read the same reports.

And I've tested Pioneer, Sony, Philips and Denon players.

None of the ones I've tested support mp3 playback from UDF dvd data discs.

Only cd data discs.

Weird.

If somebody can actually confirm a brand name player that supports this, please chime in.

Thanks! Yes, that is why I bought it (SACD and DVD-A in one inexpensive well regarded unit).

Tested my 563-A with two DVD-MP3 discs (don't remember software or settings used to record them) and neither one would play.
They were actually both detected as "JPEG", since there were jpg files on the discs.
Fortunately my Cyberhome does play them...

I can confirm tha the CyberHome CH-DVD 300 can play MP3 on DVD. A few gotchas though: This model is dirt cheap and is not the best player (performance-wise) of DVD video, especially burned media. Even though it will play MP3 on DVD, you have to navigate to a folder and it will play all the MP3s in that folder and stop. I could not get it to automatically play all folders in sequence nor would it do random play across folders.

VEFF, those JPEGs are your problem. Try burning *only* MP3 files to the DVD and check. People have reported that even if there is ONE jpeg file on the DVD along with 1000 MP3s, *only* the jpeg will be seen.

Thanks bhairavp.
I thought that might be the case, although I do know that my Cyberhome plays the MP3s, even with the jpgs on the disc.

I'll try to burn just MP3s as soon as get my PX-716A, since I don't have a DVD burner at the moment.

I'll check one or two more MP3 DVDs tonight; I only have four DVD MP3 discs or so.
