Hello, folks !

Could someone please tell me if there is a way to increase the DVD-R recording speed of LG's GSA-4120B from 12x to 16x via firmware or any related method ? I once had a Sony CRX195A1 40x12x48 CD-RW drive and was successfully changed its recording speed to 48x; thus, I think it's possible to do something like that with the GSA-4120B.

i don't think it's possible.
LG drives are less 'friendly' to firmware hacking.
except for region-free and bitsetting hacks, i don't think LG firmwares have been hacked.

I've just visited the forum you suggested and it seems that is possible to do the conversion I mentioned. However, the "hacked" firmware is being tested, although a related experience was well-succeed, at a first glance. I prefer to wait and see if a "final" (and stable) firmware for this conversion will be available. After all, in Brazil, computer hardware is absurdly expensive !

makes sense, i guess, the 4120 and 4160 are very similar drives (same hardware?).

even 12x writing only leads to good results with few media (fortunately, LG only allows 12x writing on media it works on), and 16x write speed is still rather b0rked. There's really not much sense in doing that!

Yeah, really, with a 12x burner you're already pushing the available media beyond what it's rated to do. Going to 16x only makes it that much more difficult to get a good burn.

I've never understood the point of "overclocking" DVD burners to burn faster than rated on media... then complaining that "my 4X disc I burned at 8X doesn't work!"

Yeah, I always thought that was stupid as well!

Upgrading a GSA-4120B to a GSA-4160B would allow you to burn at 16x to 16x media. There's nothing wrong with that, is there? The hack being worked on is not to allow media to be burned at faster speeds than officially supported, it's to convert the 4120B model to the 4160B model.

When looking at the latest tests, you'll see that ricoh or ty 8x +r media sometimes turns out better at 16x than 16x media.
