Today, CDRLabs brings you a review of the world's first Serial ATA DVD writer, the Plextor PX-712SA. Like its IDE counterpart, the PX-712SA is capable of 12x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R and 4x DVD±RW writing speeds and a maximum DVD read speed of 16x. On top of that, the drive boasts features like 48x CD reading and writing speeds, 24x rewriting speeds and support for Plextor's PoweRec, VariRec, GigaRec, SecuRec and Q-Check technologies.

I think that's a little overrated score for a picky single layer drive. It might've been a better and fair test if typical DVD media packages anyone can buy in local store were used as they will show compatibility and burn quality Plextor PX-712 has with what most people would buy.

Other than Prodisc, I'm not sure what else people could buy in stores. Media from CMC, Ritek, Ricoh, TY, Verbatim, etc are all there. Even Optodisc.

I'll admit that the drive had issues with earlier firmware versions, but the results were pretty good with v1.05.. especially when you compare them to the results we've been seeing from other 12x DVD writers.

sorry if i missed this in the review, but is this just a simple ide drive with a sata bridge on the back?

also you need to change the buffer level in the intro specs from 2mb to 8mb

but i to am also shocked to see 10's across the board, but if it deserves it then great

Yes. PX-716SA will very likely be using one too.
