Are there recent DVD writers that support MRW?

Mt. Rainier for CD-RW or for DVD+RW?

The Plextor 708, 712 and 716 all support it for CD-RW.

Nu tech 082 supports it for CD-RW and may dvd+RW but as i dont really care for packet writing i have never really tested it with +RW

Dont they need to write up the specs for it first before implementing it?

WTF does Mt. Rainier bring to the table? Drag and drop? I've owned a billion burners and none of them supported it so I never cared.

Not only that but Windows XP doesn't support Mt. Rainier either, making it a moot point unless you're running an OS that does.

Does having Nero's INCD effectively give you drop and drag ability?

I'm no expert on the subject but I see the main point being error correction in hardware. What many dislike about packet writing is that it can leave you stranded with faulty media when you thought your backup was secure. I have yet to see formal test reports that proves MRW to be a much more secure writing way of backing data but mfgrs claim it is.

I have a Lite-On CD writer which has Mt Rainier and have used it with In-CD and have not had problems with it yet. I have not done real tests such as cutting power in the midst of writing and can't really give a very enlightened opinion on the subject.

As for "drag and drop", I exclusively use Total Commander for all my file handling (well 99.99% of the time...) and it worked right.

No DVD drive supports DVD+MRW yet. The specs are still evolving, and will probably only be finalized when MS releases the next OS. There are major components of MRW that the drive has to support: drag and drop from Explorer (no additional sw needed), background formatting (pop the disc in and drop data immediately-it formats as needed), maps defects on the disc so the bad blocks are bypassed (like a HDD) so you should not have any bad data--in theory. You can use the "save as" function from applications, and you can download files directly to MRW drives from the internet.

It's quite interesting to note how often the DVD+R(W) implementation of Mt. Rainer is referred to as VapourWare.

As a side note, INCD commits one of the worst software sins (imho)....it gives you yet another full time process running in the background. It is not just nero's packet writing software, they all seem to do this. I don't understand why they can't write these programs so that they turn on on-demand and turn off after your done using it. System resources are a precious commodity!!!!

packet writing software has to integrate itself into the operating system. so it "runs" all the time.
that's just the way it is, take it or leave it.

AFAIK there are very few exceptions to this rule.
