I have just bought a new ND-3500A and started testing with my el-cheapo media (ie. A$0.25 ea) and was surprised to see that the burner seems to always dip in speed at every .5GB mark as illustrated below.

Image

Manufacturer : TYG02
Code : -
Disc Type : DVD-R (Book Type: DVD-ROM)
Usage : General
Recording Layer : -
Recording Speed : 2 X - 12 X
Capacity : 4.38 GB
4707321856 Bytes
Additional Capacity : -
Overburn Capacity : -

Anyone know why it does this ?

Peter

The 3500AG adjust the burn quaility all thru the burn. What your seeing is the readjust of the burn. Second issue, TYG02 -R is one of the better DVD disc and should burn at 12X with no problem on the NEC.

That is a TYG02 code, not a Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R disc. BIG difference!

Very True - On average, they will burn fine at 4x but the ND-3500A throws a wobbly at 8x, forget 12x. As I said they are el-cheapo disks, very variable in quality, in fact some will not even be recognised by the drive, but speed is not that important. You mostly get what you pay for.

I bought a bulk lot of 600 from a reputable importer on e-bay for a total cost of approx. A$ 140.00, marked as SKY silver 'high quality' - probably chinese. I have decided I prefer the cleap Plus disks as they seem more reliable than the cheap minus ones. I mostly use them for Ghosting my machines, 2 or 3 times a week, and if Ghost is happy after verifying them, then so am I - and at that price I dont mind having to do it again if the disk is bad.
Video will work with almost any junk, data is a bit more picky.

Not even real TYG02 ( = plextor labeled ones for 2€ each) burn at 12x in that drive properly. PI sum 8 gets up to ~300 :(
