Verbatim 12x DVD+R is MCC 003 not MCC 004

This may not be news for everyone, but I thought I'd mention it. Verbatim is marketing 12x certified DVD+R media in Europe (reorder 43473, Made in Taiwan). This is MCC 003, (the "good" type X47B or "Bn"), not MCC 004 as you might expect. I don't know how it differs from 8x certified MCC 003 other than packaging or price. I won't buy it again because my drive (LiteOn SOHW 1213S@1633S) will only burn it @8x and I can get printable 8x MCC 003 for less.

He knows that. It's just the fact that Verbatim is selling 8x DVD+R media as 12x media.

That's what I thought too until I saw the box. I was curious and bought some. Interestingly, it's on Verbatim's European website in German but not in English (see the table at the bottom). A couple of days ago, they had images of the 12x stuff, but they seem to be gone now.

So then is this company selling 8x DVD+R media as 12x media?

Perhaps this is a marketing ploy #-o

Verbatim is marketing a similar MCC 003 item (Reorder #94968) in the USA. On one side of the package it states 1X-8X speed. On the opposite side are the following words "Up to 12X compatible with 12X Hardware". Both my NEC-3500A and Plextor-716A burn this media at 8X.

The Plextor 712, LG 4120B and Pioneer A08 can write verbatim 8x +r media at 12x, so they will of course also write the same discs at 12x if they are labeled as 12x...

But something like "12 dvd+r media" does not exist. It's like 7.3x DVD-RAM ...

LOL

How about 5x DVD+R9?

This kinda reminds me of Verbatim's last press release for their DVD+R DL media. They claimed that it was 5x capable.. even though its rated at only 2.4x.

It is 5x capable, and the point is that they don't print "5x certified" on it... just like their 8x +r media is 12x capable, as several drives prove, but not "12x certified"

Yes, but a lot of people (including some disc sellers) don't know the difference between "capable" and "rated".

Guess why I started this rant:

It's pretty hard to argue with that kind of evidence :P

I wonder if we can get these write strategies working for the nec3500. Stock 3500 firmware will only write mcc003 at 8X. With liggy's firmware hacks, you can write them at 12 or 16x, but there are often excessive pi/po errors when the write speed hits about 12x.

Not at all

MediumRare: I know. I have seen those discs in shops as well. If verbatim had printed "8x certified, 12x capable" on them, like Plextor does on their TY 8x +R discs, then nothing would be wrong... those discs are not 12x certified and will never be, because there is no 12x +R standard, and none is planned to be created. I would never have expected Verbatim to lie to us to such an extend!

Is there any type of fine print on the back of the packaging that says anything in regards to 12X Certified?

How about a scan of the back?

OK here you are (although it's not very useful ). The single disc has a reorder 43473, the 5-pack is 43474.

You're right, that would be the proper thing to do, but as a German saying goes "paper is patient" (or long-suffering).
alexnoe wrote:there is no 12x +R standard, and none is planned to be created.

I know that. That's why there aren't any 12x burners, really (my SOHW-1213S is a decent 8x burner with good media, which is all I really need 8))

If you feel that strongly about it, I'd suggest sending an e-mail to Verbatim Europe. They've been very open to suggestions in my experience. My main purpose on posting this was to share information.

I've encountered some Verbatim packaging that was (in my eyes) much more misleading! Older forum dwellers may recall my encounter with DataLife Made in Mexico, but Verbatim was very positive in sorting that out (see later posts in the same thread).

Burners are not specified like discs are... you can claim a burner to be a 12x burner if it writes at 12x properly, and some drives do that using 8x discs.

The reason I don't like it is that a 4x disc is 1 euro, a 8x disc is 1,30 euro and a 12x disc is 1,50 Euro here. People pay 20c more for nothing. That's what I don't like ...

Verbatim's webpage still has these 12x listed.
interestingly, they are in the Englishpage and not in the Germanpage.
picture of a 5-pack.

OK, MediumRare, time to give them a call and receive another flash-drive.
