CDR or DVD-R for backing up apps?

In the past, I've always backed up my data and applications to CDs. With the increased capacity of DVDs, I'm interested in getting a DVD writer. My concern is that I read all the reviews and see extensive discussions on PI/PIF errors. I don't remember a big focus on errors in CDR reviews in the past. A few errors in a movie probably wouldn't make much of a difference, but a few errors in an app or data file can make it unusable.

So are consumer-burned DVDs more prone to having errors than CDs?

Thanks.

Currently yes - dvd burns are more prone to compatibility errors than cd burns.

However, if you pick the burner and media carefully, you can have really good compatibility (low amount of errors in reading) with dvd burns as well.

Just don't expect that you can burn on any possible media using any cheap burner, when dvd is concerned. The quality just isn't that widespread yet.
