hello all
I have a Nec 2510 with the TDB's MAddog 2.F7 firmware. Woeks fine. i onlyused the brand name medias.used Verbatim DL burned and played fine. As you know the verbatime is very expensive (CAD. 46.95/3 pk) I just found out Sunny computer selling RIDATA DL disk for 12.99 each.price seem better. But i want to make sure Ridata DL will work for MaD dog firmware 2.F7 by TDB. Has anyone tried it? or any suggestions? I think 12,99 is cheaper than buying a new hollywood DVD. RENT and Burn,, you still save money.
By the way, Is 2.F7 is the best firmware around for NEC 2510?
Waiting to hear from u
Mike

Ritek DL media is generally very crappy, whatever brand it is sold under

I agree. Ridata/Ritek is junk.

2.F7 seems to be the best for the 2510a.

Thanks guys,
I know what to do now. Save that 12.99 and wait until verbatim drop their price. yes. MADDOG 2.f7 firmware seems stable and I am happy

Yes, I was always taught by people online that Ritek/Ridata were good. But, its pretty junky. Maybe I need to hang out here more often?

I have a Pioneer 108. I burnt a Ridata DL disc @2.4x. It failed on the second layer. Anandtech.com has two reviews with DVD burners. The same thing happened to them in both reviews. I have Ridata DVD+R disc. They are "ok" if you don't burn past 8x.

I am going to get some Verbatims from Newegg.com this weekend. I will post my results. Anandtech has had good luck with Verbatims DL discs. Right now, Newegg is selling the Verbatim DL 3PK for $27.00 USD with a $10 mail-in-rebate. That's $17 USD before tax for 3 discs. Not too bad.

Early versions of Ritek's DL media had issues. I've had some drives that won't write to them and then turn around and write to Ritek DL media being sold by another company. It's weird.

It also depends a lot on the drive. Most have been tuned for Verbatim DL media and that's what you get the best results with. Since Ritek's DL media is newer, drive manufacturers haven't had time to add support for it yet... or at least support it well. Pioneer seems to be one of these companies.

Ritek DL 2.4 @ 4x on NEC 3500

Here's a scan of Ritek DL 2.4x media burned at 4 x on an NEC 3500 using firmware 2.8c SE Ritek DL 4x. It plays fine on both my standalones and it looks like a pretty good scan. I bought the 5 pack at Rima.com for 40 USD.

I think the reason is as follows:
Many people, myself included, still feel DL media is far too expensive for most people's purposes.

I just bought TDK 4X +R for 20 cents the other day; why would I pay $8 to $11 for a single DL disc when SL media is available for about 40 cents a disc (everyday price) for reasonable quality media.

Because when you have a 4 hour "art" movie that would suffer greatly from compression and u don't want to split it,5 dollars isn't too bad on occasion.

I have had 5 of them for 3 weeks and only used 2. I would much rather use the 4x Riteks at Newegg for 30 cents each but for a rare instance i will spend the money.

Not the real reason why Ritek Dual Layer is bad supported.
It's Ritek policy.

It's not approved by Philips which means lower priority. Because most times this can indicate 2 things. Huge variations in media which means more work for finetuneing. Or the companny simply thinks there big enough to force compatability.(Taiyo Yuden got away with this ! and so some others think they can do it to.)
Ritek is launcheing one after another media (R03 !/ G05 / Dual layer) and is just hopeing that being big would actually mean that compannies will support there media even if it takes much work because of there huge variations. Well you can forget it. Most compannies will do Japanese first then there partners and then the stuff that's easy to do and then we get the compannies that are big but might need lot's of tuneing.
In other words most compannies do not have Ritek on high priority list when were talking about support.

Now why does MCC/MKM media work that well. Well simply because it's the standard for the media. In other words if MCC and partners manufacture according there own quality rules it should allways work or else the drive manufacturer couldn't claime dual layer support.
All early test media for setting up support was MKM.

Let me say this when RICOH media hits the streets I think it will be better supported as RITEK even while the RITEK is longer on the market.

The questions about burning Ridata DVD+R DL
are coming from this thread:
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... 811#151811
Thanks a lot for your replies there!

I bought yesterday a spindle of 10 Ridata DVD+R DL for 19,99 €
I think that it was a good price
But for the moment I have only a NEC 3500 fw 2.1A and a LG 4163B fw A106 to burn them
I was thinking to get soon a NEC 4550 or a Plextor PX-755 to do the job

BTW I found 3 other links where this is discussed.
Burning this "Ritek-D01" MID code looks like playing "roulette":
" Ritek Ridata Double Layer "

" Ritek D01 DL ---What burner ?? "

I don't really understand the point

I just try to continue the discussion started in this other thread:
http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic. ... 811#151811
because this other thread in a forum about "Hot Deals".

My problem is that it seems to me that:
these Ridata branded DVD+R DL are worse than other Ritek-D01 MID codes like the brands Platinum or Intenso
because burning them in a NEC 3500 (fw 2.1A) goes rarely to the end of the 2nd layer.

Do you have any idea which burners are able to at least complete a burn of these Ridata DVD+R DL:
a LG 4163 fw A106, Pioneer 110 D fw 1.39, NEC 4500 fw 1.07, Plextor xxx, . . . ?
