there is no guarenteed way of knowing for sure. Every manufacturer makes the TY code media a little differently, but some emulate TY *VERY* well. Even I have to go to a little trouble of making sure I keep those discs apart from each other and properly labeled just to keep from confusing them.

Dumping out the *full* MID rather than its truncated counterpart has helped me identify fake MID's in times gone by. An example:

Truncated MID
Code: Select all
                        Media Information
Region information                                    N/A not a DVD-VIDEO
Media code/Manufacturer ID                                         PRINCO
Format Capacity                                            4.21GB(4.52GB)
Book Type                                                           DVD-R
Media Type                                                          DVD-R

Full MID
Code: Select all
                           Complete Media Code
00000000 00 6C 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 52 00 02 97 0E 0B .l...@....R.....
00000010 77 88 70 00 03 50 52 49 4E 43 4F 00 04 00 00 00 w.p..PRINCO.....
00000020 00 00 00 00 05 AA A2 22 22 20 01 00 06 0B 0F 12 ......."" ......

Although not all that common, the difference between a real MID and a faked MID can be found in the full media code. We have positively identified fake MCC003's using this methodology.

zebraxor, is there a program we can use to find out this information on DVDs. I have DVDInfoPro installed, so should that work determining if blank media is FAKE or real?

Can you give an example of a fake MCC003?

I don't have DVDInfoPro, but there are a number of tools that will show you the full MID info, Here are the ones I know of:
  • DVD-Identifier available at http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/: Click "identify" and the tab 'Media Code'-Block
  • Nero will show this information (and a lot more) if you click on "Disc Info" and then shift-cntrl-refresh
  • you can send the appropriate MMC code (READ DVD STRUCTURE) with KProbe
