I currently own the Sony DRU-510A, excellent drive, no problems, however I wouldn't mind something faster. Should I be looking at the new Sony DRU-700A as a good upgrade, improvement? With the Write Speeds being faster, and the Dual Layer capabilities, Is that a good reason to upgrade.

It is currently on sale, for $99.00 @ a Best Buy. I am thinking of purchasing it, for this reason. Valid???

Is it much of a step, better then the Sony DRU-510A?

IMO, there are better choices than the DRU-700A if you want to upgrade. Most Sony burners are rebadged LiteOn drives, which can be had for less than the Sony-named drives. LiteOn drives are great CD burners, though many consider their DVD burning capabilities as average to slightly above. For that price, I'd be more likely to save $30 and buy an NEC 3500A online, or buy a Pioneer 108 online which isn't as capable with CDs as the NEC but is a competent DVD burner, or spend a little more and buy a Plextor PX-716A at Best Buy if you don't like online retail and are really picky about brands.

The DRU-700A is based on the Lite-On SOHW-832S.

So you are saying that I should wait for the Plextor 716A???

I would not even say LiteON burners are average quality burners... I would say they are below average quality burners. I mean they aren't as bad as Artec, or BTC, but they sure can't hold a light to Pioneer, BenQ, NEC, or LG...

I think that the 832S was a good, solid drive. Though I can't say much about their 16x.

But the 700A/832S and is of the older 8x generation. It doesn't make sense to compare it with the current generation of drives like the Plex 716A.

Do not wait for the PX-716a!

Get the NEC 3520 or wait for the Pioneer A09.

The BenQ 1620 would be another fine choice.
