No. I seriously hope that you do not dream that Ritek were the only manufacturer who produces discs of different quality, and sells those different qualities under different names and different prices

:-s I think you're confused! I know all about different brands have different manufacturers. I am referring to FUJI YUDEN000T02 and your branded Plextor is made by the same manufacturer which is TAIYO YUDEN. You seem to think just because your discs are branded Plextor it would be better discs. I beg to differ when they are both made by TAIYO YUDEN.

No, that's you.

Obviously not. Do you think that Ritek G04 sold as unbranded stuff contain a different RITEKG04 code than the ones Maxell sells??

The only true sentence in your message
You seem to think just because your discs are branded Plextor it would be better discs

iirc, dolphinus once said that Plextor pays more than e.g. Fuji for those discs, exactly to ensure that (to ensure that even the crappy plextor drives work with them :D )

 Um you need to get a grip dude! I know all about other brands being manufactured by other companies. Who cares about Ritek media because they are crappy media to begin with.   :P

But you still seem to believe that Taiyo Yuden couldn't have differences in quality...

Yup, Plextor pays a premium price to get the first discs manufactured from a new stamper. The media is always as good as the best Fuji Taiyo Yuden, or better.

OK some disks are better then others thats fine, but the real point is better media or not the TLA:0000 716 and TLA:0101 716 seem to in 99% of cases have the so so or poor burns on media that does well on other drives at same speed , other drives meaning pioneer, NEC, BENQ, LG

also Ian on here has done first look at TLA:0101 716 this is the one that from rumours is the fixed release model the model that plextor delayed EU release to have made ready, as TLA:0000 release in the USA was so poor.

my own RMA went for 0000 102575 to 0101 133630 and if anything quality of burn may have gotten worse not a lot , but the point is even with great media its not working well. And i have used yuden00T02 japan both fuji and plextor and my burns look just ok to poor, but with same media on my other drives it looks great.

KenW is exactly right.

Look at the link below, which is a post I made in another forum.

My PX-712A certainly doesn't have any fantastic writing performance...

Maybe you use the wrong media? With crappy media the Plextor don´t show it´s real performance.

And the 712 is fast like some 16x DVD-writers that uses Z-CLV. Show me an other 12x-writer thats so fast like a 712 ;)

The only media I found which produces burns that are as good as with other drives is MCC-004-00.

I've also tried:
Plextor's Taiyo Yuden 8x +/-
Verbatim 4x/8x +/-R
Maxell 8x -R
Ritek 8x +/- R

As Ian said: If the drive is doing such stuff as demonstrated with really good media, no one knows what it will do to bad media. Maybe it just explodes :D

I finally talked to Plextor today about the poor writing quality. I have not gotten all of the details yet, but there will be a new firmware soon and they will be sending me a new drive. Interpret that as you will...

Hrm... I'm going to laugh if the new drive has a TLA of 0202 or something similar!

I just hope the firmware is able to solve the problem!

Me too. At least for the sake of the people that bought the drive already.

Fw 1.05 was supposed to be the promised fix-all, but it didn't quite work out that way.

The 1.05 firmware was much better than with earlier versions. However, it still wasn't perfect with some "lower quality" media.

Well, it brought the quality of more troublesome drives up to the quality of the less troublesome drives... but I still thought it didn't live up to its' hype.

I'm on my 3rd PX-712A (soon to be 4th when I RMA this drive, which was a refurb RMA for drive #2). The first one made coasters out of Verbatim 8x -R, with middling results on +R, the second made coasters out of TY 8x +R at 12x, this third one makes coasters out of TDK 8x -R, and Maxell 8x -R and gives pretty poor results with +R in general. I ran all on fw 1.05. If this fw brought the quality of my drives up to the level of the less troublesome ones I'd hate to see the more troublesome drives...

Eek... well, it fixed several of the problems that my drive had at least. I'm still not THAT impressed with it, but I stopped being impressed with Plextor before i even really started
