Plextor 712a burn faster than rated DVD?

Can I use my Plextor writer to burn 4x media at 8x?

Yes, there are many 4x discs that the Plex can overspeed. Of note are Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD+R and DVD-R; Mitsubishi/Verbatim 4x DVD+R, and Ricoh 4x DVD+R.

Cool, you guys are the best.!

I was looking for disks that would burn at the 12x. Using easy CD and nero I didn't see the option to burn at speeds above what my HP 8x dvd+ disks are rated for... the software seems to default to 8x or less.

If you use Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+R, you will be able to do 12x with no problems. Also, some types of Verbatim (MCC) discs will do 12x too I believe.
