is there a patched firmware that will make a BENQ 800A burn dvd-r without paying the $10.00 royalty charge from BENQ.

No.

Why bother upgrading though? DVD+R disc prices are low. If you use the BenQ bitsetting tool to burn the discs as DVD-ROMs, they have a much higher DVD player compatibility rate than DVD-R discs do.

I upgraded mine but I don't know why I bothered. I will burn off the few -R discs I have and stick to +.

don't bother... it doesn't burn DVD-R very well at all.... you need the BenQ DW1620 for that!

on pricewatch.com, i can find 50 sonic dvd-r made by must001 and i get really good results w/ my nec 2500A
I pay about 10.00 for them. they are much cheaper than the dvd+r. so i thought that maybe if i update my benq800A FREE or the 10.00 fee, it might be worth it.

No it isn't. The Benq 800 officially doesn't pay for the -R licens.
The price of the firmware is for the bigest part the price of the royalties Benq has to pay for -R.

Check this site at the Firmware Page... I don't know if it has what you want, but it might help you decide wether it's worth it or not to upgrade firmware...

As RJW said, that's only for licensing. And if you look at the newer DW1620 you'll see that BenQ isn't afraid of giving away free upgrades via firmware at a moments notice
