This firmware should be up on Sony's website shortly, but I also put it up on our mirror for those that want to check it out.

http://s87915552.onlinehome.us/cdrlabs/710_BYX2.exe

It will work with the 710A and 710UL.

Wow... that's very cool. Sony seems really good about adding features via firmware where so many other manufacturers would just release a new model.. (like when the 500A's got 4X DVD+R burning when the 510's came out).

I know, I know, it's a rebadged LiteOn (or Optorite?) but still...

It's a Lite-On. Sony told me about this firmware update back in early October. It took a little longer than I expected for them to release it.

I think it's important to mention some specs of this drive:

Writing Speeds:
DVD+R DL: 2.4X CLV (max.) Now: 4x
DVD+R: 16X CAV (max.)
DVD+RW: 4X CLV (max.)
DVD-R 8X Z-CLV (max.) Now: 12x
DVD-RW: 4X CLV (max.)

CD-R: 48X CAV (max.)
CD-RW: 24X Z-CLV (max.)

Read Speed:
DVD-ROM (single layer): 16X CAV (max.)
DVD-ROM (dual layer): 8X CAV (max.)

CD-ROM: 48X CAV (max)

Sony's international website had it up quicker this morning; it was there by 5 AM Pacific. :o The American website seems slow; it never even posted the BY02 upgrade. :-s

Anyway, 8x and 12x for DVD-R should also now be P-CAV instead of Z-CLV, so that's an added benefit to the upgrade. :D

I have the 710A, with the latest firmware, but in nero I can't burn CD-Rs any faster than 40x. Any ideas why this is?

Cheers,

James

It could be the media itself but nowadays I think that there isn't many media that wont burn at least 48x...

Check your media, if it's not a media issue try upgrading Nero. Use Nero Info Tool to check for maximum burn CD speed...

Other than that it must be ASPI issues... At least with the short info that's what crosses my mind...

Probably caused by TurboBoost like always with Sony drives. Hold the eject button for 5 seconds and then higher speeds should be allowed.

Tried it and it worked! Thanks very much! Thats really strange, what is Turboboost?

Sony decided that 48x was not worth it. Not really that much faster than 40x. And carries the risk of poorly-manufactured discs exploding from spinning too fast.

The hardware is.
But SONY does some firmware research themselves still.

Doesn't every company that rebadges other products claim that "they" actually do the R&D? and that the product is "theirs" ?

The Sony/Lite-On situation is interesting though.. since parts of the SOHW series was developed by both companies.

Like RJW.. I too have heard that Sony does their own development. Oddly enough, it wasn't Sony that told me this.

Of course I knew about the internal parts, but I would suspect LiteOn to handle all of the firmware dev....
Interesting if both Sony and LiteOn are both working on the firmware.
Double the dev efforts, double the quality? :P Not in this case sp far :(
