RICOHJPNW11 DVD+RW Playback problem on set-top player-SOLVED

Hi Everyone!

I have been experiencing playback problems on my Sony (DVP-NS300) set-top player with the Sony-branded RICOHJPNW11 DVD+RW media burned on my Pioneer DVR-108 burner.

When I insert the media in the the set-top player I hear constant "tracking" sounds (the same sound you here when you change tracks with the remote) and the picture and audio pause every 10-15 seconds. It's almost like it can't track right and has to correct itself. According to various online compatibility reports, the player should have no trouble with this media. What would the symptoms that I described indicate? Do I have a bad disc? Would it help to do a full erase or maybe try to burn at a slower speed?

When burning to my Fuji(TY) DVD+R, the playback is flawless.

Thanks for your help!

Typically, these discs burn very well, so the burn quality should not be an issue. Looks like your player just can't read them very well. Suggest you try a few other RW types and see if one works for you. Philips and Mitsubishi come to mind for alternatives. Also try -RW if you can.

Thanks, rdgrimes.

Just out of curiosity, I tried burning the same ISO to the same physical media using NERO 6.6.0.1 and then DVD Decrypter 3.5.1.0.

Looks like PI and PO errors are higher with NERO. (the first pic is with Nero, the second with DVD Decrypter) . The disc burned with DVD Decrypter appears to play OK. This is strange, since the Nero burned disc errors aren't that high.

The differences in those 2 scans is insignificant, and can be attributed to normal variation between burns. Also keep in mind that many RW discs need to be burned a few times to get "broke in", so error rates will vary for that reason too, as well as whether the disc was full-erased or quick-erased.

But the bottom of this issue is the player's ability, or lack of it, to read this RW media.

Thanks again, rdgrimes. So for Mitsubishi, would that brands should I look for? Would that most likely be Verbatim and TDK branded DVD-RW media?

I think trying -RW is probably my next step. :)

Yes, and yes.

The problem with DVD-RW is that anything over 2x is next to impossible to find...

Good point. Worst case scenario, if I can't get 4x DVD-RW media and have to stick with DVD+RW, should I still look for Verbatim or TDK? What about Memorex? Or do I risk getting RICOHJPN again with those brands in the +RW format?

Keep in mind, when you are buying RW media, that the cost of a new player is pretty low. My JVC's will play any RW, even with really poor burn quality.

Deep down I know it might be time for a new DVD player. What model of JVC do you have?

I have the NP10S and N412S. AFAIK, they all use the same drive.

Well, I can’t find ANY 4x DVD-RW media locally. :( 4x DVD+RW media is of course readily available. I can get TDK, Fuji, Imation, Memorex, Sony or even the cheapo Compusa brand. Would TDK be the best bet? Is the Compusa brand any good?

While a new player may certainly be the best long term solution, I guess I would be willing to spend another 10-15 dollars on some different media first. :)

Unfortunately, those may all be the same Ricoh W11 discs.

Since my player seams to handle DVD+R media just fine, I suppose another strategy would be to get some cheap DVD+R media that I could use for digital video testing purposes that I could throw away when I was finished with and forget about rewritable altogether.

Yup, but with +RW prices around $1 per disc on sale, they can be pretty handy for short term backups and movies that you don't indend to keep.

Hmmm...so what brand of +RW would most likely NOT be Ricoh W11? I may just have to be patient and get some online. :-({|=

Verbatim. Or you could try finding some older Ricoh W01, but that's limited to 2.4x speed.

I forgot to mention: HP DVD+RW is generally Phillips, and is available at office supply stores for cheap. Write quality is not up to par with the Ricoh, you might need to burn at 2.4x, YMMV with the Pioneer drive, I burn it on NEC.

Would make sense to for me to try to burn my Ricoh W11 at 2.4x or even 2x to see if my Sony player likes it any better? Could burning at a slower speed make a difference in playback? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

One way to find out. It could make a difference.

I guess that you don't get "Made in Japan" Sony +RWs (MID: SONY S11), since you started the thread with Sony/Ricoh's. If you do see them though, they may be worth a try too. My initial impressions were very good- very low PIF rate.

Yeah it looks really good. I haven’t seen the Sony S11 anywhere.

Any idea what Office Depot branded 4X DVD-RW would be?
